Northern Ireland focused ISP Fibrus looks set to complement their expected Project Stratum contract win (here) by pumping £14m into deploying their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across premises (homes and businesses) in the Causeway Coast and Glens area.

Openreach (BT) has today hailed the efforts of 750 engineers who have helped them to extend their commercial rollout of 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP technology, which now covers over 50% of Northern Ireland (420,000 premises); considerably more than Scotland, Wales or England.

Multiple credible sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that the Northern Ireland Executive are set to announced that alternative network ISP Fibrus has beaten BT (Openreach) to be chosen as the main supplier for their £165m Project Stratum programme, which will extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage.

The UK Government has today announced that their Rural Gigabit Voucher scheme has been given a £22.2m top-up boost by a total of 17 local councils in England, which has increased the size of their vouchers and meant that more homes and businesses can now potentially get a 1Gbps capable broadband ISP network installed.

Ofcom has today released their Summer 2020 update for UK broadband and mobile networks, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has grown to 14% or 4.2 million premises (up from 12% in Jan 2020) and 2% (590,000 premises) are still unable to get speeds of 10Mbps+. Geographic 4G coverage is now 67% (unchanged).

The elephant in the room of the UK Government’s broadband centric Universal Service Obligation (USO) has always been the fact that it isn’t truly “universal” and tens of thousands of premises have fallen outside of its scope. In other words, getting a minimum speed of 10Mbps can become very expensive for some.

The entire village of Edenderry in County Down has just become Openreach’s (BT) first demand-led Community Fibre Partnership (CFP) in Northern Ireland, which has enabled the entire community to be covered by their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

The latest independent data has predicted that 2.07% (up from 1.8% in May 2020) of UK premises could be affected by full to capacity FTTC (VDSL2) based “fibre broadband” street cabinets on Openreach’s (BT) network (this can stop you from ordering a new service), but some areas are being hit harder than others.

The UK Government has today confirmed a series of changes to both the Electronic Communications Code (ECC) and Mobile infrastructure planning, which when taken together are intended to help boost the on-going deployment of both “gigabit-capable” broadband and 5G mobile networks (as well as the Shared Rural Network).

Belfast-based UK ISP Fibrus, which is currently deploying a new “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in Northern Ireland and was recently gobbled up by Infracapital, has announced that they’ve committed £21m to extend their network into parts of Mid Ulster.

The latest independent model has estimated that the H1 2020 coverage of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks across the UK has risen to 14.8% of premises (up from 11% in H2 2019), while 61.7% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 59.3%) and 22.1% are within reach of “gigabit” (1Gbps) speeds.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today announced that a further 94 rural villages and towns have been added to their UK roll-out plan for 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology over the next 2 years, but all of them will be in Northern Ireland.

Belfast-based UK broadband ISP Fibrus appears as if it could be set to secure a key £15m Full Fibre Northern Ireland Consortium (FFNI) contract, which will construct a new gigabit-capable Dark Fibre or FTTP network to connect around 880 public sector sites across 10 council areas by March 2021.

Belfast-based UK ISP Fibrus, which recently began the £85m+ roll-out of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in Northern Ireland and aims to cover 145,000 premises by around 2024 (here), has now committed to help ensure that 100% of homes can access such services by the end of 2025.

Northern Ireland firm Obelisk Networks UK (formerly Obelisk Communications), which is part of a civil engineering group that normally builds infrastructure for others, appears to be considering a plan that would see it build a new FTTP broadband network and then offer direct retail products or wholesale out to ISPs.
