Ofcom has today published their annual Connected Nations 2016 report, which confirms that 89% of UK premises are now within reach of a fixed line superfast broadband service (up from 83% in 2015), with take-up hitting 31% (up from 27%). But only 1.7% (498K premises) can get “full fibre” (FTTP/H).

The Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council in Northern Ireland has opened a new survey to all local residents and businesses until Friday 11th November, which aims to identify any broadband “not spots” in the region.

Mobile operator Three UK has announced that consumers in Northern Ireland will be the first to trial their new “Home Mobile Broadband” service, which really just sounds like a normal 3G / 4G data tariff with a bigger usage allowance (up to 40 GigaBytes).

The UK telecoms regulator has today published its Connected Nations 2015 report and confirmed that 83% of premises are now within reach of a fixed line superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service (up from 75% in 2014), with take-up reaching 27% (up from 22%). But they also changed the definition of “ultrafast” speeds from 100Mbps+ to 300Mbps+.

The latest Broadband Delivery UK Market Testing Pilot (MTP) to go live is Avanti’s scheme, which is using their Ka-band HYLAS 1 and HYLAS 2 Satellite spacecraft to deliver broadband speeds of up to 30Mbps to potentially 13,000 premises across parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland (e.g. Antrim, Aberdeenshire, Dumfries, Galloway, The Borders).

Remote rural areas in Northern Ireland have been given yet another boost after a further investment of £1 million was extracted from the Tackling Rural Poverty and Social Isolation (TRPSI) budget in order to help expand the reach of faster broadband and fuel uptake.

A new group called Lightstream Community Fibre (LCF), which appears to have cloned B4RN’s network approach in Lancashire (England, UK), has been setup to help bring a 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband network to rural parts of the Ards Peninsula (County Down) in Northern Ireland.
