The on-going Northern Ireland Broadband Improvement Project (NIBIP), which only began one year ago, appears to have been boosted by another £17 million investment in order to help bring BT’s faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity to an additional 38,000 premises.

The Northern Ireland Executive (NIE) has announced a £24.5m project, which is part funded by BT and the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) scheme, to make faster Internet speeds available to over 45,000 of the regions most remote rural homes and business premises by December 2015.

A new group called Lightstream Community Fibre (LCF), which appears to have cloned B4RN’s network approach in Lancashire (England, UK), has been setup to help bring a 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband network to rural parts of the Ards Peninsula (County Down) in Northern Ireland.

A new business impact study conducted by Regeneris and BT during January 2013 has predicted that the deployment of fibre optic based (FTTC and FTTP) broadband ISP services in Northern Ireland could generate over £750m in additional revenue by 2018 and save circa(c) £45 million in operating costs.

DETI UK Move to Fill Northern Irelands Last Sub 2Mbps Broadband Slowspots

The UK government’s Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) has quietly launched a new public consultation that aims to find and fill the last remaining sub-2Mbps broadband ISP slowspots in Northern Ireland, which is despite the regions superfast broadband availability already being close to 100%.
