Ofcom’s latest Spring 2022 report into fixed broadband and mobile coverage has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 33% of the UK (up from 28% in Sept 2021), while 19.3 million homes (66%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 47%). Geographic 5G coverage has also improved.

UK ISP BT has today issued their latest biannual study into the progress they’ve made toward delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which reveals that they’ve so far built a USO connection to over 4,600 premises, with more than 2,300 further builds in progress.

Somerset-based telecoms and engineering company Obelisk, which is involved in the construction of some UK full fibre broadband networks, has today been acquired by global telecoms and energy networks giant Constructel (Grupo Visabeira) for an undisclosed sum.

Back in January the Government’s Building Digital UK team “soft launched” a new National Rolling Open Market Review (NROMR) process for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout with a limited number of suppliers (here). Today they’ve launched another NROMR and are opening it up to more suppliers.

Full fibre operator and UK ISP Fibrus, which is currently rolling out a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of Northern England and Northern Ireland, has today strengthened its leadership team with three senior appointments and reported that they now directly employ almost 300 people.

Alternative network and UK ISP Fibrus has today secured a further investment boost of £220m from a consortium of banks, including the UK Infrastructure Bank, which will be used to extend their existing rollout of a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Northern Ireland to 330,000 premises.

A new Ofcom report has found that 61% of parents are aware of the existing network-level internet filtering (Parental Control) tools provided by big UK broadband ISPs, yet only 27% have actually chosen to use them. Meanwhile, 6% of children have circumvented parental controls and 5% used a proxy server to avoid them.

Jisc, which provides network and IT services to the education sector, has once again chosen Neos Networks to deliver yet another of their new Dark Fibre networks, which will this time be used to serve their sites (e.g. Universities and Research Centres) in Northern Ireland with speeds of up to 100Gbps (Gigabits per second).

The Government’s Education Secretary, Nadhim Zahawi MP, has today made a new commitment for “every school across the country” to be able to access “high speed internet” by 2025, which is said to complement the wider £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout programme. Funding will also be provided for related WiFi upgrades.

The Department for the Economy (DfE) in Northern Ireland has issued a brief progress update on their £197m state aid supported Project Stratum scheme, which is working with UK ISP Fibrus to spread a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across 85,000 premises in rural areas by March 2025.

Alternative network ISP Fibrus, which is currently building a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across Northern Ireland and Northern England, has today announced that their full fibre infrastructure has now reached 104,381 premises (up from 58,000 premises in August 2021).

The UK Government’s Building Digital UK team has published an update on the start of their first procurements under the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout, which is now inviting bids for contracts worth up to £292m to upgrade rural premises across Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, Cambridgeshire, Dorset and Teesdale.

The UK Government has just published a response to its consultation on the question of how significantly faster broadband ISP networks can be extended to reach the final 0.3% of the country (i.e. under 100,000 premises), which are too expensive for their new £5bn Project Gigabit programme to reach in its current form.

Since April 2017 the UK Government has allowed broadband networks to claim 100% business rates relief on new fibre infrastructure, but this “Fibre Tax” holiday is about to expire and there’s been no indication of an extension. Some operators fear this will add “significant cost and uncertainty to the investment case for full fibre.”
