Infracapital-backed broadband operator and UK ISP Fibrus, which is building a full fibre (FTTP) network across rural parts of Cumbria (England) and Northern Ireland, has this week re-launched their Community Fund for 2025 with a pot of £120,000 to invest across a variety of rural community groups within the operator’s network patch.

Infracapital-backed network operator Fibrus has today confirmed what we first reported last week (here), which is that their £108m publicly funded Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract in Cumbria (Lot 28) has been “extended” to cover an additional 21,000 premises in hard-to-reach areas. But it’s a bit more complex than that.

The CEO and Co-Founder of UK ISP Fibrus, Dominic Kearns, has apologised to the several thousand premises in Northern Ireland that are still without access to their full fibre broadband network following Storm Éowyn (pronounced ‘Ay-oh-win’), which struck nearly three weeks ago. But most of their customers are now back online.

Internet connection benchmarking firm nPerf has today published the results from a new crowdsourced study into fixed broadband ISP speeds across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. But oddly the results only cover Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, Vodafone, TalkTalk, Fibrus (NI) and Ogi (Wales).

Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly have this week criticised UK broadband and mobile operators, particularly Vodafone, BT, EE, Sky Broadband, Vodafone, O2 and Fibrus, for their response to the damage caused by Storm Éowyn. The complaints touched on issues of slow repairs, absent compensation and poor communication with customers.

Consultancy firm FarrPoint has published the first 2025 edition of their Digital Connectivity Readiness Index (DCRI), which ranks the G7 countries by the quality and coverage of their digital infrastructure (broadband, 5G etc.), as well as other areas like digital skills and online security etc. Overall, the United Kingdom continues to rank top and has improved its scores.

New data from Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net broadband connection benchmarking service, has revealed that Storm Éowyn (pronounced ‘Ay-oh-win’) triggered a “rapid, severe and sustained decline” in mobile performance across all operators in Ireland and parts of the UK, particularly Northern Ireland and Scotland, on a “scale not seen before“.

ISPreview has today published our biannual UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H2 2024, which found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 73.53% of premises (up from 67.68% in H1) and 85.87% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 83.39%). The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has published its annual performance report (accounts here), which provides breakdowns of how many premises in the United Kingdom have received gigabit-capable broadband coverage as a result of their public subsidy (i.e. funding provided under the prior “Superfast Broadband” programme and the current £5bn Project Gigabit scheme).

Internet benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published their “definitive” 2024 Fixed Broadband Experience report, which gauges the performance of various internet service providers across the UK and then separately across 12 of its regions (inc. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Overall, Virgin Media came top in the national scores, but the regional results are different.

Ofcom has published their annual Connection Nations 2024 digital infrastructure report, which among many other things finds that residential gigabit-capable broadband ISP networks now cover 84% of the UK (up from 78% in 2023), while outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 90-95% of premises (up from 85-93%). But rural cover remains poor.

The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has published its latest quarterly November 2024 progress update on the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which now has “over” 30 live contracts in place across England and Wales – supporting planned deployments of gigabit-capable broadband to around 1 million premises.

The UK Government (DSIT, UK Space Agency) has today announced the launch of a new £3.5m “Very Hard to Reach Programme“, which will conduct three projects that seek to use hybrid networks (e.g. a mix of satellite, fixed wireless and 5G/6G mobile technologies) to help improve broadband connectivity in remote rural areas.
