nPerf Ranks EE Top in 2021 Benchmark of UK Mobile Networks

French company nPerf has today published the results of their annual crowd-sourced data study into UK mobile broadband (4G, 5G) performance, which finds that EE has unseated rival Vodafone from last year’s top spot and is now named as the best operator across most of the performance categories.

Ofcom Hits O2 UK with £10.5m Fine for Overcharging Customers

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has this morning been hit with a fine of £10.5 million after the telecoms regulator, Ofcom, found that more than 140,000 of their customers had been “overcharged” – due to billing errors – when leaving the operator between 2011 and 2019.

Over a Third of UK Home Workers are Switching to Mobile Data

A new YouGov survey of 4,328 British adults, which was commissioned by mobile operator O2, has found that 36% of Brits currently working from home (1,351 of the respondents) are regularly switching to mobile broadband (4G / 5G data) to stay online and 61% say it’s made the working experience better.

Sky Mobile UK Customers are Now Able to Share Out Spare Data

Sky (Sky Broadband) has this week added a temporary new feature to their 4G and 5G powered Sky Mobile plans, which enables customers with lots of spare data (mobile broadband) in their “Piggybank” to share some of it with someone they know who may need it (e.g. friends or family).

A new study commissioned by O2 UK has predicted that the first phase of the new £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project with Vodafone and Three UK, which will see all three mobile operators working to build and share 222 new 4G (mobile broadband) masts (here), could increase the turnover for rural businesses by £187.7m per annum.

Vodafone Attract Most UK Broadband ISP Complaints in Q3 2020

Ofcom’s latest Q3 2020 consumer complaints report has just been published, which names UK ISP Vodafone as attracting the most gripes for home broadband, while Plusnet did the same for landline phone, Virgin Mobile were the worst for Mobile services and Virgin Media came bottom for Pay TV.

PwC Study Claims 5G Mobile May Add £43bn to UK GDP by 2030

New research from professional services firm PwC has forecast that the productivity and efficiency gains enabled by the rollout of ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) technology will drive business, skills and service change worth £43bn to UK GDP by 2030. The UK telecoms regulator has today confirmed that the new COVID-19 lockdown will delay the start of their auction for the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands, which was previously due to start this month. The new bands should help to improve the coverage and speed of 5G mobile (mobile broadband) networks.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has published an ‘issues statement‘ on the proposed £31bn merger between mobile operator O2 and broadband ISP (inc. TV, phone) Virgin Media, which highlights the authority’s two main concerns – the risk of higher consumer prices and worse 5G connectivity for rivals.

Mobile operator giffgaff has announced that they will soon be boosting the data (mobile broadband) allowances on some of their plans and as part of that they’ll also launch two new 5G ready “golden goodybag” plans. But it’s not all good news as the operator is doubling the price of data usage on their Pay As You Go (PAYG) service.

EE Still in the Lead as Best UK Mobile Network for H2 2020

The latest biannual H2 2020 study of mobile network (4G and 5G) performance across the United Kingdom by RootMetrics has found that EE (BT) continues to be the best overall operator. On top of that they also delivered the fastest median (average) broadband download speed of 43Mbps (similar to 42.6Mbps in H1).

The trade association for UK mobile operators, Mobile UK, has warned that calls for the 5G rollout to be delayed on health grounds are “without merit“. The commentary comes after Professor John William Frank (University of Edinburgh) alleged that the transmitter density required for 5G may be “potentially harmful to health.”
