Mobile network operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has confirmed that they will also be providing 40GB of free data (mobile broadband) a month to enable disadvantaged pupils in years 3 to 11 to continue their learning from home during the latest COVID-19 related national lockdown.

It’s been a long.. time coming, but Vodafone has now confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve finally started to add the ability to send and receive text (SMS) messages via Wi-Fi Calling, which is important news for those who no longer have the option of using a femtocell based Sure Signal (3G) router. Just O2 left to go.

As expected all four of the UK’s primary mobile network operators, including Three UK, Vodafone, O2 and EE (BT), have now confirmed that they have “no plans” (yet) to remove free roaming when the UK fully leaves the European Union on Thursday 31st December 2020 this week.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has today announced that they’ve completed a successful pilot of Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) tech from Vilicom, which unlike other trials was this time used to extend indoor 4G and 5G mobile coverage in order to tackle signal blackspots.

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has published the results of a new study, which examined how 4G and 5G based mobile broadband speeds compare across the United Kingdom and between different operators. Overall EE appeared to deliver the best speed, but Vodafone or Three UK are close behind.

A new joint study between Telefonica (e.g. O2 UK) and telecoms kit maker Nokia, which focused on the power consumption of the RAN (Radio Access Network), has claimed that the latest generation of ultrafast 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) networks are up to 90% more energy efficient “per traffic unit” than existing 4G ones.

Crowdsourced benchmarking firm Tutela has just published the results of a new study, which examined the effect of network congestion on 4G and the latest ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband networks from EE (BT), Vodafone, O2 and Three UK. Sadly Three suffered the most and slowed by over 36% during peak hours, on average.

The European Commission (EC) has today agreed that the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) should have the final say on Liberty Global’s proposed mega-merger between broadband ISP Virgin Media and mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK), but this is not expected to delay the outcome.

Mobile network operators including EE (BT), O2, Three UK and Vodafone have today collaborated to launch a new service called NumberVerify (NV), which is a new consumer safety solution that aims to make it both easier and more secure to authenticate a user’s identity for online transactions.

A new study from consulting and research firm Analysys Mason has estimated that the new generation of ultrafast 5G based (mobile broadband) networks, which are currently being deployed by Three UK, Vodafone, EE (BT) and O2, could deliver £14.8bn in economic growth to the UK between 2025-2040 (at a cost of c.£3bn).

Ofcom’s new Q2 2020 consumer complaints report is out today, which names UK ISP TalkTalk as attracting the most gripes for both home broadband and landline phone, while Three UK did the same for Pay Monthly Mobile services and Virgin Media came bottom for Pay TV.

The UK Government yesterday introduced new powers for the Secretary of State to, among other things, establish a new Universal Service Obligation (USO) for 4G or 5G mobile networks “in the future,” albeit only if that is “deemed necessary.” Questions will now be raised over what such a USO would look like.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has today announced that, since April 2020, they’ve increased their 4G based (mobile broadband) network capacity in over 33,109 postcodes across London, which they say includes some of the city’s most residential boroughs. More capacity tends to improve data speeds by reducing congestion.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has taken the bold decision to upgrade 2,600 sites (e.g. masts supplying 4G and 5G services), mostly in rural Wales and South West England, by using kit supplied as part of the new Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN). The sites are currently served by Huawei.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) will today extend their existing partnership with Hubbub (here), with the aim being to donate 10,000 devices and 12 months of free calling and internet connectivity to “digitally excluded people” in UK cities that are either facing, or at risk of, new Tier 3 lockdown restrictions (COVID-19).

Ofcom UK has set out new measures that will make switching between broadband ISPs on physically separate networks easier (e.g. Openreach to Cityfibre), but due to the complexities involved providers will be given until December 2022 implement it. Mobile operators will also be banned from selling “locked” handsets.
