The £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) agreement between BT (EE), Vodafone, Three UK and O2, which aims to extend geographic 4G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage to 95% of the UK by 2025, could be in doubt after some of the participants expressed concern over high costs. A key meeting is due to discuss the issue today.

RootMetrics has published their biannual H2 2019 study of mobile network (3G and 4G) performance across the United Kingdom, which once again named EE (BT) as the best overall operator and they also delivered the fastest aggregate median (average) mobile broadband download speed of 36.5Mbps.

Global Wireless Solutions has published the results of their latest “extensive national” study into mobile network (4G etc.) performance across 36 cities, which is one of the few to name O2 as the overall “most reliable network” (followed by EE, Vodafone and Three UK). But it’s not just a question of mobile broadband speed.

In a somewhat unsurprising development the Government has again warned UK people that the current “guarantee of free mobile phone roaming” throughout the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway “will end” on 1st January 2021, which marks the conclusion of the imminent 11 month Brexit transition period.

Ofcom has today published their latest Q3 2019 consumer complaints report, which reveals that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for fixed line broadband, home phone and mobile (Pay Monthly) service. Meanwhile Virgin Media took the most flak their Pay TV service.

Mobile operator giffgaff looks set to refresh several of their 4G mobile “goodybag” plans from 26th February 2020, which will see some data (mobile broadband) allowances being boosted and all of their tariffs – even the cheapest ones – gaining access to unlimited calls and texts. On the flip side, pay-as-you-go users will suffer a huge hike!

Sky (Sky Broadband) has, after a short delay, finally made ultrafast 5G technology available on their Sky Mobile plans at no extra cost (with VIP), which as part of their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement is based off the new network being deployed by O2 (Telefonica UK) in the 3.4GHz band.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has today announced its own plans for an Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN), which works to standardise the design and functionality of mobile network (3G, 4G or 5G) hardware and software (i.e. making network deployments more cost effective). Vodafone also plans O-RAN trials (here) in rural areas.

Mobile operators EE and Vodafone have today come top in umlaut‘s (formerly P3) annual 2019 UK Mobile Network Test, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 3G and 4G (voice and data / broadband) services across 21 cities, 29 towns and along 10,700km of major roads.

The Local Government Association, which represents hundreds of councils across England and Wales, has finally figured out what almost everybody else has known for years, that those mobile network coverage (3G, 4G, 5G etc.) checkers – usually run by operators – are not a particularly reliable gauge of signal quality.

Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica) ended 2019 last night by announcing that they had switched-on their ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband network in a further 13 cities across the United Kingdom, which meant they finished the year with a total of 20 as planned. But coverage in the new cities remains focused upon the busiest parts.

As expected EE (BT) has today announced that they will next year be joining O2, Vodafone and Transport for London (TfL) to help pilot a new 4G (mobile broadband and voice) network through tunnels and at station platforms on the London Underground (tube trains).

The UK telecoms regulator has opened a second investigation into O2, which is examining whether or not the mobile operator provided “complete, accurate and on time” information to them as part of their on-going probe into an “Extraordinary Performance Failure” of the company’s metering and billing system.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) has welcomed expectations that the current UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, will today announce plans to prioritise mobile coverage, particularly in rural areas. The operator expects that the move will support the industry-led plan for a new Shared Rural Network (SRN) alongside Vodafone, EE and Three UK.

Mobile operator O2 claims to be deploying the “fastest free stadium Wi-Fi in the UK” at the London Stadium, which forms part of a tie-up between their business division and networking giant Cisco. Unfortunately they haven’t provided any information on expected speeds or backhaul capacity to help backup their claims.
