A probe by telecoms industry regulator Ofcom has today found “reasonable grounds to believe” that Plusnet may have continued to incorrectly bill customers of their fixed line broadband and phone services between 7th March 2008 and 3rd September 2015, even after they left.

Mobile operator Three UK has taken a leaf out of TalkTalk’s “Fix Britain’s Internet” book and launched a new campaign (‘Make the Air Fair‘), which adopts the image of Ofcom’s CEO, Sharon White, and calls on her to impose a spectrum ownership cap of 30% that would hit EE (BT) and Vodafone.

Still not good enough, BT. The CEO of Ofcom, Sharon White, has told MPs that BT still isn’t investing enough into UK broadband infrastructure and confirmed that the regulator would “absolutely” give a final verdict on Openreach’s future in December. But the changes might have to be forced through.

A new Vodafone commissioned study from Point Topic has predicted that only 6.5% of UK households can expect to be covered by Gigabit (1000Mbps+) capable FTTP/H fibre optic broadband cables by 2020, but other data from Point Topic forecasts a figure of 9.4% when business premises are included.

After a long delay Ofcom has unveiled the rules for their forthcoming auction of radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz (2350-2390MHz) and 3.4GHz (3410-3600MHz) bands, which will help mobile operators to launch Mobile Broadband (4G) services with “very fast download speeds“. But it’s bad news for BT / EE as a cap will apply.

Ofcom has today ordered BT to repay (with interest) TalkTalk and Sky Broadband after the telecoms regulator found that the national operator had “overcharged” both ISPs for their Special Fault Investigation (SFI) engineer service and Time Related Charges (TRC).

A competition row between Vodafone and BT has erupted once again after the former wrote to Ofcom and complained that Openreach’s trial of 330Mbps (50Mbps upload) capable G.fast broadband tech had broken the regulator’s strict rules, which require a consultation to take place first.

Fibre optic ISP TrueSpeed has hinted to Ofcom that its 150Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network, which is currently rolling out to parts of the Chew Valley in rural North East Somerset (England), could also be expanded into Devon, Wiltshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire.

Homes on the Isle of Arran, which is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde (Scotland), look set to become the first in the UK to get a faster broadband connection via White Space technology. This harnesses the gaps in radio spectrum that exist between Digital Terrestrial TV channels (470-790MHz).

BT has today tried to show its “positive and direct impact on the UK economy“, and hopefully fend off some calls for Openreach’s separation, by publishing a report which claims that they spend more than £9.3bn a year with UK suppliers and boosted the economy by £23.1bn (GVA) during the past year.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, claims to have found “reasonable grounds for believing” that some of EE’s customers may have received inaccurate bills that “over-[charged] them for calls they made to its customer service number, 150, whilst roaming in the EU.”

Openreach (BT) hope to publish a final reference offer for their new Dark Fibre Access (DFA) product by the end of 2016, which will give rival ISPs “physical access” to their fibre optic cables. But a recent progress update reveals that disagreements over contracts, repair times and fees have yet to be resolved.

Ofcom’s latest Telecoms Market Data Tables (Q2 2016) update has revealed that the United Kingdom is now home to a total of 24,858,000 fixed residential and small business broadband lines (up by 684,000 from a year previously); 10.91m (44%) of those are cable DOCSIS or fibre (FTTC/P/H) based.

The United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority will today begin enforcing a new guideline that requires Internet Service Providers (ISP) to adopt clearer advertising of their products by, for example, combining the cost of line rental (phone) into their monthly broadband prices.

The telecoms regulator has today hit “failing” UK mobile and broadband provider Vodafone with a “record” fine of £4,625,000 after they were found to have breached a series of consumer complaint handing rules. Ofcom’s investigation of the case uncovered a variety of serious mis-selling, inaccurate billing and poor complaints handling procedures.
