UK Broadband Ltd Secure Indefinite Licence Extension for 4G at 3.4GHz

UK Broadband Ltd (PCCW), which is the parent of London-based wireless broadband ISP Relish, has officially been granted an indefinite extension to its spectrum licence for use of 40MHz in the 3.4GHz band that is being used to help deliver 4G (LTE) based fixed wireless and mobile broadband services.

Mobile operator Three UK has been fined £250,000 by the United Kingdom’s national telecoms regulation, Ofcom, after it failed to handle some customer complaints in a fair and timely manner.

UPD Rural vs Urban Gap Closing as Average Broadband Speeds Hit 18.7Mbps

Ofcom’s latest biannual report into the real-world speeds of fixed line broadband ISP consumers across the United Kingdom reveals that the Internet performance gap between rural and urban areas is still wide, yet their speeds are now improving at a faster rate (+20% rural vs +5% urban / suburban). Overall the average download rate has risen by just 5% to reach 18.7Mbps (up from 17.8Mbps in the last report).

Ofcom UK Bids Farewall to Long Time CEO Ed Richards

In a somewhat expected move the Chief Executive of national UK telecoms and media regulator Ofcom, Ed Richards, has announced that he is to stand down from his post at the end of December 2014. At present nobody has been lined up to replace him.

Sky Seeks Code Powers to Support New UK PIA and SLU Broadband Trials

Ofcom has proposed to grant Code Powers to BSkyB Ltd. (Sky Broadband) in order to both make it easier for them to maintain and develop their core fibre optic network (e.g. quicker approval for street works) and to support trials of new solutions, such as a Passive Infrastructure Access (PIA) and Sub-Loop Unbundling (SLU) related broadband services.

The communication regulator’s latest Telecoms Market Data Tables update for Q1-2014 has revealed that the United Kingdom is now home to a total of 22,808,000 fixed line residential and small business broadband ISP connections (excluding corporate lines), which is up by +1% on the previous quarter. Meanwhile more fixed phone line customers are going mobile.

UK Mobile Operators Cleared for 3G and 4G Power Boost at 1800MHz

As expected the national UK telecoms regulator has today allowed O2, Three UK, EE and Vodafone to improve the coverage and capacity of their 3G (UMTS) and 4G (LTE + WiMAX) based Mobile Broadband networks by boosting the maximum permissible base station transmit power in the 1800MHz radio spectrum band by +3dB.

WarwickNet Plans Broadband Network Expansion via UK Code Powers

BT Openreach Allow UK Customers to Feedback on Engineer Performance

Broadband and phone engineers working for BTOpenreach and external contractors, which maintain BT’s national UK telecoms infrastructure, will soon take part in a new trial that allows residential customers to give feedback on their performance after a visit. The results probably won’t be made available to the public.

UK Superfast Broadband Coverage Hits 78% as Uptake Reaches 26.7%

The UK telecoms regulator has today published their annual 2014 Communications Market Report, which reveals how Next Generation Access (NGA) “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services are now available to 78% of the United Kingdom (up from 73% last year) and take-up has increased to 26.7% (up from 17.5% last year).
