Consumers-Complaints-for-Ofcom-UK-via-Smartphone

Ofcom has published their latest quarterly (Q1 2024) study of UK consumer complaints, which saw NOW Broadband (NOW TV) being labelled as the worst provider for attracting the most gripes about broadband and landline phone, while Virgin Media did the same for pay TV services and O2 were the worst for Mobile.

Telecoms giant BT Group have today posted a brief trading update to the end of June 2024, which reveals that Openreach added another 1 million premises (unchanged on the previous quarter) to the coverage of their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network – delivering total coverage to 15 million. Take-up also held at a steady 34%.

Network testing firm Global Wireless Solutions has today published the results of a new study that examined connectivity experiences in the UK, which saw Virgin Media (O2) win two awards for ‘Best Broadband Experience‘ and ‘Best Combined Connectivity Experience‘, while EE came top for ‘Best Mobile Experience‘.

Low-cost focused UK broadband ISP Plusnet, which is a BT Group (EE) sibling, is to follow their parents by introducing a new pricing model, which moves away from the old percentage (%) figures and inflation (CPI) approach to annual price hikes. Instead, from 9th July 2024, they’ll introduce a “clear and simple” view of future price rises, expressed in “pounds and pence“.

Today we’re taking our usual biannual look back to see how the average UK broadband download and upload speeds have changed across the fastest nationally available fixed line ISPs, mobile operators and Starlink (satellite) since the end of 2023. Overall, broadband speeds have continued to improve, albeit not without some surprises.

Budget UK ISP Plusnet, which is typically positioned as BT’s low-cost division for basic internet access services, has now confirmed that their own-brand of EE powered Pay Monthly SIM-Only Mobile plans will finally be closing “throughout” this month (June 2024). Customers must transfer before their accounts are closed to avoid losing their service and number.

The UK telecoms, internet and media regulator, Ofcom, has today hit broadband ISP BT (including subsidiaries EE and Plusnet) with a fine of £2.8 million, which occurred after their investigation found the operator had “failed to provide” 1.1 million customers with clear and simple contract information before signing up to a new deal.

The latest BT Group H2 FY24 results to March 2024 reveal that Openreach’s UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network added 1 million premises to their coverage in the quarter to cover 13.812m, while EE’s 5G mobile covers 75% of the population (up from 72% in H1), the PSTN (analogue phone) migration won’t complete until Jan 2027 and Openreach is named “preferred bidder” for Type C Project Gigabit contracts.

Network benchmarking firm Opensignal has published a new report that attempts to analyse the “user experience” impact of Virgin Media’s (VMO2) decision to open up their existing fixed broadband ISP network to wholesale (here) via a new business (NetCo), which is expected to be introduced during the second half of 2025.

Broadband ISP Plusnet has this week introduced a bunch of new discounts across their home broadband packages, which for example have slashed the monthly price of their top 900Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) package to just £41.99 per month on a 24-month term.

Ofcom has published their latest study of UK consumer complaints for Q4 2023, which once again names Virgin Media as the worst for attracting the most gripes about fixed broadband, landline phone and pay TV services. Meanwhile, O2, which is part of the same company, attracted the most complaints for Pay Monthly Mobile services.

Low-cost focused UK broadband ISP Plusnet (BT Group), which seems to have spent the past few years scrapping many of its extra features (TV, Mobile etc.), has perhaps unsurprisingly now confirmed that it will no longer offer home phone services to existing customers once analogue (PSTN/WLR) services are switched off by BT and Openreach.

EE) has today introduced their new “clear and simple” pricing policy, which sees them move away from % figures and CPI (inflation)-linked changes for their monthly plans in order to “provide certainty for our customers on exactly what their price change will be, and when“.

A couple of years have now passed since Plusnet announced that it would no longer be providing managed broadband and phone services to new customers under the John Lewis brand (here). But until now the ISP has continued to provide a service to remaining customers who haven’t yet moved to Plusnet or another provider, yet that is now about to end.

Consumer magazine Which? has today published the results of their latest 2024 ranking of home broadband providers, which found that smaller ISPs like CommunityFibre, Zen Internet and Hyperoptic topped the table and eclipsed the biggest providers that now mostly inhabit the bottom half of the table.

European benchmarking firm nPerf has just published the results from their annual 2024 crowdsourced study into UK fixed broadband ISP performance, which finds that subscribers of Virgin Media, Fibrus and Vodafone enjoyed the best internet connection performances over the past year.
