Broadband ISP and telecoms giant BT have today confirmed that they will recruit more than 600 additional apprentices and graduates in 2025 (up from 500 in 2024) – forming part of their September 2025 intake. The roles will span across areas such as cybersecurity, software engineering and customer service.

Broadband ISP Plusnet has introduced a bunch of new discounts across their home broadband plans for new customers, which for example has cut the monthly price of their top 900Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) package to just £37.99 per month on a 24-month term (price increases by £3 per month from April each year). Plus there’s a £110 reward card thrown-in.

Telecoms giant BT Group has today published a brief trading update to the end of 2024, which reveals that Openreach added another 1 million premises in the last quarter (unchanged) to the coverage of their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network (total 17m) and saw related take-up rise by 472k (net adds) to total 6m (stable at 35%). But total broadband lines fell by 208k as rivals continue to bite.

Broadband, TV, phone and mobile provider BT (inc. EE) has today reiterated their policy on annual UK price increases, which readers may recall was first introduced last year (here and here). This is intended to align with Ofcom’s ban on mid-contract price hikes that are linked to confusing inflation and percentage-based changes (here).

Low-cost broadband ISP Plusnet (BT Group), which over the past few years has already lost many of its extra features (pay TV, home phone (on FTTP), mobile etc.), appears to have added yet another service to the digital dustbin after customers began complaining that they could no longer add a Static IP address to their accounts.

The Publishers Association (PA) has convinced the High Court to force most of the major broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom (BT, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, TalkTalk, EE and Plusnet) to extend and expand their existing block of websites, focusing on those that were found to facilitate internet copyright infringement (piracy) of books and journals.

Low-cost internet provider Plusnet, which is part of the wider BT Group, has got itself into a bit of hot water with a small collection of their old legacy email users after leaving them unable to access their inboxes for several weeks. But despite the passage of time, the provider still won’t say what has caused the problem or when it will be fixed.

Internet benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published their “definitive” 2024 Fixed Broadband Experience report, which gauges the performance of various internet service providers across the UK and then separately across 12 of its regions (inc. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Overall, Virgin Media came top in the national scores, but the regional results are different.

Ofcom has published their latest Q2 2024 study of UK consumer complaints, which names and shames NOW Broadband (NOW TV) for being the worst provider by attracting the most complaints about broadband, while EE did the same for landline phone and O2 took most flak mobile. Finally, both EE and Virgin Media were jointly on the naughty step for Pay TV.

The BT Group has today published their latest biannual H1 FY25 results to Sept 2024, which reveals that Openreach’s UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network added 2.1 million premises to their coverage in H1 to cover 15.9m, while EE’s 5G mobile coverage increased to 80% of the population (up from 75% in H2 FY24). The fibre build rate has also been accelerated again.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today banned a series of website-based adverts for major broadband ISPs and mobile network operators, including BT, EE, Plusnet, TalkTalk, O2 and Virgin Media, after the way they all presented their annual mid-contract price hikes was found to be “misleading“.

Benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published a complementary study to their recent research into the differences in broadband reliability across countries (here), which reveals the ISPs that deliver the strongest and poorest “broadband reliability experience” in the UK. Suffice to say that it’s a good day for Virgin Media and altnets.

Ofcom has published their latest quarterly (Q1 2024) study of UK consumer complaints, which saw NOW Broadband (NOW TV) being labelled as the worst provider for attracting the most gripes about broadband and landline phone, while Virgin Media did the same for pay TV services and O2 were the worst for Mobile.

Telecoms giant BT Group have today posted a brief trading update to the end of June 2024, which reveals that Openreach added another 1 million premises (unchanged on the previous quarter) to the coverage of their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network – delivering total coverage to 15 million. Take-up also held at a steady 34%.

Network testing firm Global Wireless Solutions has today published the results of a new study that examined connectivity experiences in the UK, which saw Virgin Media (O2) win two awards for ‘Best Broadband Experience‘ and ‘Best Combined Connectivity Experience‘, while EE came top for ‘Best Mobile Experience‘.
