BT See Loss of 169k Openreach UK Broadband Lines and Appoints New CFO

Telecoms giant BT Group just published a short trading update to the end June 2025 (Q1 FY26), which reveals that Openreach lost another 169,000 total broadband lines to rival networks over the past quarter (down from 243k in the previous quarter). But they also saw their “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage grow to over 19 million premises (up by 1m) and take-up increased to 37% (up from 36.13%).

The annual Broadband Genie 2025 Awards survey has this morning named UK ISP Plusnet as the “Best Broadband Provider” of the year, while a variety of other internet service providers also scooped various other awards across several different categories.

Internet provider Plusnet recently began notifying customers that they “will no longer be offering an email service to new or existing” users of their broadband service, and have instead begun the process of migrating users of their legacy services (inc. webspace and domains) to a new platform. But the new service won’t remain free.

BT Faces Formal Trade Dispute After Union Rejects Pay Offer

Telecoms and broadband giant BT appears to be facing another dispute over workers pay after the Prospect union, which represents a majority of staff at management grades within the UK company, overwhelmingly rejected a “derisory” pay offer from the employer (96% of those who voted elected to reject the offer on turnout of 68%).

Ofcom has today published their 2025 study of UK broadband, phone and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaint levels, fault repairs, compensation and install times for the largest providers. For example, TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%) and Plusnet (BT) secured the highest (91%).

The BT Group has today published their biannual full year (H2 FY25) results to March 2025, which reveals that Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) network added 2.2 million premises to their UK coverage in H2 (up from 2.1m in H1) to cover 18.08m (4.9m in rural areas) and will accelerate its rollout by 20%. But broadband line losses to rivals hit 243k in the last quarter (up from 208k).

Ofcom Blasts NOW and TalkTalk for UK Broadband Complaints – Q4 2024

Ofcom have today published their latest quarterly (Q4 2024) study of UK consumer telecoms complaints, which shames NOW Broadband (NOW TV) and TalkTalk for attracting the most complaints about broadband, while O2 took the most heat for Mobile and Virgin Media was put on the naughty step for Pay TV services.

Plusnet UK Discounts 900Mbps FTTP Broadband to £36.99 with £100 Reward

UK ISP Plusnet has today introduced a bunch of new Easter discounts across their home broadband plans for new customers, which for example has cut the monthly price of their top 900Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) package to just £36.99 per month on a 24-month term (mid-contract price hikes apply). Plus there’s a £100 reward card thrown-in.

Broadband ISP PlusNet UK Set to Trial IPv6 on High Touch Network

Internet service provider PlusNet, which is part of the wider BT Group, has informed customers that they’re “now ready” to finally start trials of Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) addressing on their “High Touch” broadband network. The ISP has previously only conducted a small scale technical trial on their “Low Touch” network (here) – used by c. 90% of customers.

Opensignal Find Ultrafast UK Broadband ISPs More Reliable vs Superfast Ones

Network benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published a new report that examines how the UK’s broadband experience varies across speed tiers, with homes on “ultrafast” (300Mbps+) connections enjoying a “smoother and more reliable” service than those on “superfast” (30-300Mbps) ones. ISPs EE, Vodafone and Plusnet topped the performance rankings.

Uswitch.com has today named the winners of their annual 2025 Telecoms Awards event, which among things saw UK ISP Plusnet once again being named as the best “National Broadband Provider of the Year“, while YouFibre won the best regional provider award and giffgaff scooped the win for best mobile “Network of the Year“.

BT UK to Shut Older Contact Centres in Leeds and Exeter

Telecoms and broadband giant BT has confirmed to ISPreview that, as part of their ongoing UK programme to modernise and consolidate the number of offices they have, they’ve decided to close their Contact Centres in Leeds and Exeter over the “coming months“. The move is expected to impact hundreds of jobs, but many will be consolidated into more modern sites.

New Which Survey Award Best and Worst UK Broadband ISPs for 2025

Consumer magazine Which? has published the results from their latest broadband ISP satisfaction survey, which questioned 4,347 UK adults (Dec 2024 to Jan 2025) about their internet providers. Overall three ISPs were labelled ‘Recommended Providers‘ – Zen Internet, Plusnet and Utility Warehouse, while NOW TV (NOW Broadband) and Virgin Media were ranked at the bottom.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT appears to have confirmed that their strategy of turning EE into the group’s “flagship brand for our consumer customers”, which was eventually expected to result in the BT brand focusing more on business customers, will no longer result in the original brand being retired for consumer products.
