The popular online property sales database, RightMove, has confirmed that their service for displaying the “typical” broadband ISP speeds at each of the 1 million+ homes listed on its website in the United Kingdom has now left the trial phase and become a permanent feature.

The physical availability of a superfast broadband (25-30Mbps+) ISP network is not the only barrier to adoption and a new map of England, which was put together by telecoms analysts at Point Topic, attempts to identify where there is the highest risk of related “digital deprivation“.

The total number of global broadband subscribers in Q3-2013 has grown by 1.8% in the quarter to reach 670 Million (up from just 0.7% added in Q2). But the data also reveals that the UK has a 132.1% annual growth rate for fibre optic based broadband (FTTC/P/H etc.) and that puts us top of the table.

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has slashed its prediction, which originally forecast that the United Kingdom would be home to just under 26m broadband lines at the end of 2016, by “almost” 8% to 23.88m due to the strain on disposable incomes and delays to the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) deployment of BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) network.

London-based broadband analyst firm Point Topic has told ISPreview.co.uk, as part of our exclusive interview, that hybrid fibre optic (FTTC, DOCSIS etc.) services are the best way of getting affordable superfast Internet access to 95% of the country by 2017 and that smaller (altnets) ISPs should play a “major role” in connecting the final 5%.

The European Commission (EC) has quietly published an updated annual report into the coverage of superfast broadband (Next Generation Access) services around the EU, which shows that good progress is being made in most areas towards achieving the Digital Agenda goals (e.g. 30Mbps+ for all by 2020) but some countries are dragging their feet.

The latest Q3-2013 analysis of global broadband tariffs has found that the cost of slower copper based (ADSL) broadband ISP services has increased in Western Europe. Meanwhile the Megabit price of superfast fibre optic and cable (FTTH, FTTC, DOCSIS3 etc.) based technologies has become even cheaper.

28th October, 2013 (15 Comments)

The latest information on coverage of true fibre optic broadband (FTTH/P/B) connections in the United Kingdom suggests that the market hasn’t moved much since the end of 2012. The latest count for June 2013 records a total of 186,500 premises have now been passed by the ultrafast (100Mbps+) connection method.

25th October, 2013 (4 Comments)

RightMove, the popular online property sales database, has this week enhanced its existing service by showing “typical” broadband speeds at each of the 1 million+ UK homes listed on its website.

23rd October, 2013 (0 Comments)

The latest Point Topic report reveals that the total number of global broadband subscribers in Q2-2013 has grown just +0.7% (down from +2% in Q1) to total 656,500,000, which is the “slowest quarterly growth reported since 1998“. But the expansion of superfast fibre optic (FTTH, FTTC etc.) based connectivity has continued and now accounts for nearly 25% of all connections (up from 22% in Q1).

22nd August, 2013 (12 Comments)

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has today published a new report on broadband coverage across the United Kingdom, which predicts that superfast (30Mbps+) availability could hit 90.8% by the end of 2015. ISPreview.co.uk has also been able to obtain an exclusive map that splits the presence of fibre FTTx and cable (DOCSIS) networks.

20th August, 2013 (26 Comments)

A new study has claimed that Europe will fail to make superfast broadband (30Mbps+) ISP speeds available to 100% of households by 2020. But it will achieve 90% coverage and most of that will be due to the mass adoption of hybrid-fibre (e.g. FTTC and cable) technologies that combine fibre optic with existing copper or coax cables.

24th July, 2013 (38 Comments)

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has today published a short health check of the United Kingdom’s drive towards making superfast broadband (25-30Mbps+) speeds available across the country, which warns that the future demand for 1000Mbps (Gigabit) broadband connections will widen the digital speed divide between urban and rural areas. So is it time for FTTH?

18th July, 2013 (6 Comments)

A recent report from Point Topic claimed that Satellite broadband ISPs might finally have become an “attractive option” for consumers seeking higher speed internet connections, especially those in UK rural areas. But has it really reached a “tipping point” towards even wider success and if so then why aren’t consumers lapping it up.

10th July, 2013 (0 Comments)

Point Topic has today published their latest (Q2 2013) summary of global residential broadband prices across 90 countries and thousands of different tariffs, which found that the cost of high-speed internet access increased slightly during the quarter but the UK became even cheaper.

5th July, 2013 (4 Comments)

The latest map from Point Topic has revealed that uptake of superfast broadband (30Mbps+) based internet connections in the United Kingdom has now reached 20% (Q1-2013), which is largely thanks to Virgin Media’s effort to double its customers speeds and thus lift several million consumers into the same area of performance.

21st June, 2013 (8 Comments)

The latest Point Topic report for Q1-2013 reveals that the total number of global broadband subscribers has grown by 2% (12.5 million) in the quarter to hit 654,600,000 (up from 643.7m in Q4-2012), which remains fairly flat but continues to be fuelled by the rollout of new superfast fibre optic (FTTH, FTTC etc.) connectivity.
