Trooli to Withdraw FTTC Broadband from Two Kent UK Villages UPDATE

Alternative network operator and ISP Trooli (Call Flow) has revealed that they’re also planning to shut their “up to” 100Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based broadband network in Kent, which currently still covers hundreds of premises across the villages of Stansted and parts of Fairseat.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has today tweaked the language on the information page for their Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) in a number of key ways. This sees the removal of “rural” specific language and the introduction of language stating that some areas are “open for urban voucher projects“.

Network operator and ISP Trooli (Call Flow) has confirmed to ISPreview that a small number of their customers are at risk of disconnection, which will occur when they shut one of their old hybrid wireless and fibre optic broadband networks in rural Hampshire (England). Cross Party MPs Warn Risk to Life Still Exists with UK Digital Phone Switch

A new report from the Digital Communities All-Party Parliamentary Group (DC APPG) has been published, which examines the ongoing industry-led switchover from Openreach, BT and KCOM’s legacy phone lines to new digital (IP / VoIP based) networks. But it warns that, despite recent efforts, vulnerable users still face a “risk to life” from the switch.

The ISPA and INCA have today published new ‘Best Practice Guidance’ for gigabit broadband operators that are building new poles as part of their UK network expansions. The guidance aims to support the Government’s goal of “ending the deployment of unnecessary telegraph poles” (here), not least by requiring providers to engage more closely with communities before they build.

Quickline Confirm Expansion of Yorkshire UK Gigabit Broadband Projects

Rural broadband ISP Quickline has today confirmed that they’ve reached an agreement with the Government’s Project Gigabit broadband roll-out programme. The deal will see them expand their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover an additional 6,000 hard-to-reach homes and businesses across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England.

Welsh Government to Reopen ABC Broadband Vouchers this Spring

The Welsh Government (WG) has revealed that their Access Broadband Cymru (ABC) grant scheme is to “reopen” this spring 2025, albeit with some changes. The scheme previously offered funding to help rural homes get a faster broadband service installed in areas of slow connectivity, until it was paused last summer (here).

Gov Commit £45m for Better Internet Connectivity in Around 1,000 UK Schools

The UK Government’s Department for Education (DfE) has today committed to invest £45 million into improving internet connectivity and further plans to make digital standards a requirement for all schools across the country, which includes fibre broadband upgrades for 833 schools. The goal is to help close the remaining digital divide.

For the second time this week (here), the Government (DSIT) has published another round of contract modification notices for several of Wildanet, Fibrus, CityFibre and Quickline’s state aid funded Project Gigabit broadband roll-outs across several regions – North Yorkshire, Cornwall, Cumbria, Suffolk, Hampshire and Norfolk. The tweaks change both the level of public funding and premises target.
