The UK Government has today called on local authorities to help support the roll-out of gigabit-capable broadband (FTTP, DOCSIS 3.1) and 5G mobile networks by, among other things, implementing new advice on land access and valuations in order to speed up the pace of deployment.

Businesses and some surrounding homes on the Hillhouse Technology Enterprise Zone in Wyre (Lancashire, England) look set to benefit after the local Wyre Council agreed to support a £250,000 extension (SPR-2) of the nearby Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN), which could widen the availability of gigabit broadband speeds.

We’ve just been informed that UK ISP Gigaclear has today reached a settlement in their R100 (Reaching 100%) legal dispute with the Scottish Government. The case had been preventing the LOT 1 part of the deployment contract from being award to BT and thus delaying the roll-out of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+).

Capita has today signed a new 5-year £8 million contract with Cheshire East Council in England, which will see them roll-out a Wide Area Network (WAN) to help provide data services for over 500 public sector sites (e.g. local councils, schools, fire and police service etc.) in the county. A new WiFi network is also planned.

The latest independent H1 2020 study of broadband coverage among UK new build homes has indicated that 87.3% of houses constructed this year were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network (up from 83% in H2 2019), which rises to 97.6% for 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” services (up from 96%).

Rural broadband developer Broadway Partners (aka – ISP Broadway Broadband) has today reached an interesting new agreement that will enable them to harness Western Power‘s low voltage poles. The deal will be used to support their on-going deployment of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP) infrastructure to homes.

The Scottish Government has this afternoon revealed the details of their new voucher scheme, which aims to help “ensure superfast broadband access for all” by provide funding of up to £5,000 to help homes and businesses not in scope of either their R100 contracts or commercial roll-outs to obtain a 30Mbps+ capable connection.

The Scottish Government has, as part of the wider Connecting Scotland programme, today put £15m toward helping a further 23,000 low income households, specifically those without proper broadband internet access, to get online. The extra funding will prioritise disadvantaged families with children and young people leaving care.

The Mobile UK trade body, which represents Three UK, Vodafone, O2 and EE (BT), has called on the Government to accelerate their softening of mobile planning laws, which comes after a new survey found that 59% of business would be helped by “enhanced mobile coverage and data capacity” as part of their COVID-19 recovery.

Last autumn Openreach (BT) revealed that the West Devon (England) town of Okehampton would be among 13 other rural locations to help pilot a “range of new tools and techniques” for deploying their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network (here). Fast forward to today and the work is almost completed.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today confirmed that they’ve just completed the build of their 500th new mobile site, located in Glencoe (Scotland), as part of their contract to roll-out a new 4G based Emergency Services Network (ESN). This is on top of the 19,000 existing sites that have already been upgraded for the ESN.

The UK Government has today announced that nearly half a million premises have been connected to gigabit-capable broadband since summer 2018, which stems from £1bn of public investment. But in order to push take-up they’re now launching a new Gigabit Take-Up Advisory Group (GigaTAG).

The UK government’s new £900m Getting Building Fund (GBF), which seeks to help create new jobs, skills and infrastructure across England in order to aid the recovery from COVID-19, has announced its allocations to various regions. A few of the projects also include funding for new gigabit broadband and “full fibre” networks.

The Scottish Government has issued a small update on the progress of their £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) project with BT, which is working to extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage. The good news is that the first Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) build is about to begin, but the voucher scheme may be delayed.

The CEO of Openreach (BT), Clive Selley, has warned that the UK Government’s proposed framework for how it intends to invest £5bn in order to ensure that “every home” can access gigabit-capable broadband (1Gbps+) by the end of 2025 is so complicated that it risks being turned into a “bureaucratic car crash.” Delays likely.

Rural operator Broadway Partners (ISP Broadway Broadband), which aims to roll-out their “gigabit-capable … fibre” network to cover 500,000 UK homes and businesses by the end of 2022, has announced a new £2m scheme to help improve connectivity across rural Monmouthshire in Wales.

At the start of this year the UK Government unveiled a £30m package to support an open competition (here), which aimed to look at how ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) could create “new opportunities in industries including film, TV, video games, logistics and tourism.” The winning projects have now been revealed.
