Competition in the UK and EU markets for Satellite based internet access, which can help to serve remote rural areas, is heating up and as a result Eutelsat (Tooway) will today announce a series of new packages for their KA-SAT spacecraft at 9° East. Faster speeds of up to 20Mbps and unlimited data allowances are two of several enhancements.

The Northumberland County Council (NCC) in North East England has announced the launch of a new £1.3 million loan scheme that has been designed to encourage small satellite, wireless or other alternative technology ISPs to come into the county and offer their broadband services to the most remote rural areas.

A new Government commissioned report from Analysys Mason has revealed that the total radio spectrum (e.g. wifi, digital tv, 3G etc.) market was worth £52 billion a year to the UK economy in 2011 (up 25% in real terms since 2006) and rising. But Mobile Broadband is going to get cheaper.

Global satellite operator SES (SES Broadband) has confirmed that its new ASTRA 2F spacecraft, which was launched into orbit at the end of last month, will bring affordable internet download speeds of up to 20Mbps to rural parts of both the UK and Europe. On top of that it will also make self-installation a possibility.

The Hampshire County Council (HCC) has quietly launched a new Alternative Broadband Pilot scheme, which borrows an idea from Wales by offering grants worth up to £300 to help “Not Spot” homes in rural areas install an “alternative” broadband service that can provide broadband speeds of more than 2Mbps+.

Avanti Communications UK has just been given the green light to launch its second broadband satellite (HYLAS 2) into space, which will be sent aloft within the next couple of days aboard Arianespace’s heavy-lift Ariane 5 rocket from French Guiana.

Last week saw satellite ISP Tooway Direct become the first UK reseller to adopt Eutelsat’s new range of faster and more flexible 18Mbps capable broadband packages via the KA-SAT spacecraft (here), which is targeted at rural communities. Now several more ISPs have updated their packages but many continue to conceal the usage policy (FAP).

A multi-national team of scientists working out of the University of Southern California (USC) have successfully tested a new networking technology that can “twist light” to send data at a staggering speed of up to 2.56Tbps (Terabits per second)! The solution could “potentially” be adapted for use in fibre optic cables or even satellite links.

Satellite ISP Bentley Walker has pledged to provide their Tooway (Eutelsat) broadband service with free installation and free activation to several isolated communities in rural Cumbria (England, UK). The move follows a decision by Cable & Wireless Worldwide to cease their wireless internet service in Duddon Valley and Branthwaite.

Global telecoms giant Cable & Wireless Worldwide (CWW), which is busy trying to sell itself to Vodafone for £1.044bn (here), has warned two rural England (UK) communities in Cumbria (Duddon Valley and Branthwaite) that it will cut their broadband connection by the end of June 2012 because the public subsidy has expired.

Global satellite operator SES ASTRA has tipped BSkyB (Sky Broadband) to be one of the first in the world to deploy the next generation of Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) services (aka – 3840×2160 pixels or “4K” / 7680×4320 pixels or “8K“) into homes, possibly by 2015, which could call into question the future competitiveness of over-the-top (OTT) style broadband TV (IPTV).

Worldwide satellite operator SES (ASTRA) has renamed its internet service subsidiary ASTRA Broadband Services and their familiar ASTRA2Connect product to SES Broadband Services and SES Broadband respectively. The new names are said to be “in line with SES’ new Corporate Identity“.
