Shetland Threatens to Go it Alone on Future Broadband Upgrades

The remote Shetland Islands Council (SIC) has decide to start exploring the possibility of extending “superfast broadband” coverage across the island(s) by itself, which they say is due to a “failure to deliver” under the Scottish Government’s wider £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) programme.

OneWeb Pledge Fibre Like Satellite Broadband Speeds to Arctic Region

British registered space company OneWeb has announced that the first area to be covered by their new compact Low Earth Orbit (LEO) ultrafast broadband satellites will be those above the 60th parallel North (Arctic), which might possibly include some of Scotland’s remote north isles.

Shetland Secures £1.91m for Full Fibre Broadband Network Build

Good news. The remote Shetland Islands Council has secured a public investment of £1.91m from the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund, which will be used to extend their existing Gigabit fibre network to include public sector sites (schools, council buildings etc.) on the North Isles of Yell and Unst.

The Highlands Council has agreed to commence a mapping exercise that aims to identify the remaining “not spots” in superfast broadband cover, which is to be accompanied by a workshop event next month to debate the issue. It’s hoped this will help to establish a clear plan for boosting coverage.

Significant Telecoms and Internet Outage on Shetland Causes Chaos

The Shetland MSP Tavish Scott has called for an “urgent investigation” after residents on the remote Scottish Shetland Islands were left without vital emergency services cover for around five hours on Saturday due to a major telecoms outage with BT’s infrastructure.
