The state aid supported Better Broadband for Suffolk project in England is expected to start signing some new contracts with ISPs in the latter part of June – July 2018, which could help them to achieve their ambition of 100% “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage by the end of 2020.

At the end of last year the B4RN East Anglia (B4RNorfolk) ISP began construction of a new community built and funded “hyperfast” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network for rural villages in parts of Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex (England). Today the first properties have been connected.

The rate of consolidation among UK fixed wireless broadband ISPs has picked up pace again after InTouch Systems, which operates a network across Norfolk and Suffolk via ITSwisp, announced that it had acquired wireless provider WiSpire that operates in the same region.

The plucky rural ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which has been deploying their 1Gbps community built and funded fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband network to remote homes in Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire, has now connected 3270 properties and is expanding into Suffolk and Norfolk.

Chelmsford-based wireless ISP FibreWiFi (Buzcom), which predominantly focuses upon delivering 30Mbps+ capable broadband coverage to significant swathes of Essex and parts of Suffolk in England, is now an approved supplier for the Government’s £60m Universal Broadband Voucher Scheme.

Over the past two months a growing number of UK councils have begun to consult on how best to use money that has been clawed back (gainshare) from BT in order to further extend local broadband coverage, but this time around they all seem to agree that NGA connectivity starts at 30Mbps, not 24Mbps or 15Mbps.

Suffolk’s Deputy County Council Leader, Christopher Hudson, has called on the local authority to consider making it a requirement of the planning process for property developers to ensure that their new build homes support superfast broadband connectivity.

The Suffolk Coastal District Council in England has said that a successful pilot of a rural fixed wireless broadband network, which covers a number of areas (Shingle Street, Aldeburgh etc.) and was first launched in 2012 (here), could soon be expanded to cover more locations.

The Central Suffolk and North Ipswich MP, Dr Dan Poulter (Conservative), has secured a 30 minute debate on the topic of poor rural broadband and mobile connectivity for Monday next week, which will no doubt rehash many of the familiar concerns over the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK project.

The Suffolk County Council (SCC) today claims to have signed the United Kingdom’s first Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) based Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract with BT, which aims to extend the coverage of the operators “fibre optic broadband” (FTTC/P) network to 95% of local homes and businesses “before 2018“.
