MLL Telecom and Cityfibre Unveil Gigabit Fibre Network for Suffolk UK

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has today officially unveiled their plan to build, operate and own a 114km Dark Fibre spine network across 10 towns in Suffolk, which is being supported by UK business ISP partner MLL Telecom and an award of £5.9m from the Gov’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) project.

Lancashire-based rural ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North) has announced that they intend to almost double their staff count by hiring a further 20 people. Openreach (BT) has informed residents in the rural Suffolk village of Hadleigh Heath that they will have to wait until late January 2019 before a new “fibre broadband” street cabinet (FTTC service) is activated, which came after the last one was destroyed in a car crash on 16th August 2018.

Suffolk UK Confirm Plan for 98% Superfast Broadband Cover in 2020

The Suffolk County Council in England has officially confirmed that their £64m state aid supported Better Broadband for Suffolk (BBS) project with Openreach (BT) will achieve 98% coverage of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable (FTTC/P) networks by the end of 2020 as hoped (up from over 93% today).

Over the past two months a growing number of UK councils have begun to consult on how best to use money that has been clawed back (gainshare) from BT in order to further extend local broadband coverage, but this time around they all seem to agree that NGA connectivity starts at 30Mbps, not 24Mbps or 15Mbps.
