Alternative network operator Freedom Fibre, which recently received a funding boost from UK ISP TalkTalk (here) and is busy building a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to homes in semi-rural parts of North England, has just added four new towns across Merseyside, Cheshire and Greater Manchester to their plans.

Internet traffic across UK broadband ISPs surged last night on the back of several Premier League Football matches, which were heavily streamed online via Amazon’s Prime Video service. As a result, budget internet provider TalkTalk saw record network traffic, which peaked at 8.1Tbps (Terabits per second).

Several alternative UK network (AltNets) builders, including Gigaclear and CityFibre, among others, are reportedly set to launch a legal challenge against Ofcom’s recent approval of Openreach’s “Equinox” offer (here), which introduces a “major” price cut (details) to the incumbents Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products.

Low-cost UK ISP TalkTalk appears to have quietly launched a new “Fibre 1Gbps” broadband service as part of their CityFibre and Openreach based Future Fibre packages, but at present it only seems to be available in Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) areas (CF areas are still limited to 500Mbps) and costs just £49.

Ofcom has published their latest Q2 2021 (calendar) consumer complaints study, which saw TalkTalk come top of the naughty table for gripes about their fixed line home broadband and phone services. Meanwhile, Virgin Media took the most flak for Mobile and Pay TV, although overall complaints were down.

Analysis by Thinkbroadband (TBB), which maintains an independent database of broadband network coverage, has called into question CityFibre’s recent claim to have covered 1 million UK premises with their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has today introduced a new package that bundles a home “Fibre Broadband” (FTTC / VDSL2) service with a cheaper subscription to Netflix’s popular internet video streaming service, albeit without requiring new customers to take out a traditional Pay TV service first in order to benefit.

A number of our readers have been asking for an update on the progress being made by several major UK broadband ISPs, including TalkTalk, Vodafone, Plusnet and Virgin Media (VMO2), toward the deployment of the “new” IPv6 internet addressing standard. Sadly only one provider was able to give a rough launch date.

CityFibre, which is investing £4bn to cover 8 million UK premises with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network by around the end of 2025, has today announced the successful completion of their first target by extending the network to cover 1 million homes and businesses before the end of 2021.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has today raised the prices for some of their legacy internet access packages by £2.50 extra per month. On top of that, some of the UK provider’s calling charges (for those not covered by an inclusive allowance) will also be increasing again from 1st December 2021.

Pay TV solutions provider Netgem this week reported that the decision by Origin Broadband UK to appoint an administrator (here), which came after the ISP struggled to tackle over £20m in losses, resulted in the TV firm taking the decision to “write-off” some £422,000 (500,000 Euros) worth of “unpaid invoices“.

Several major UK broadband ISPs, including BT, EE, Plusnet, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Virgin Media (VMO2), have been ordered by London’s High Court to block six more streaming websites after they were found to be facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has this week updated their list of blocked websites (i.e. those where they’ve been told to do so by the UK High Court) to include a number of new sites that, following an injunction secured by the Motion Picture Association (MPA), were found to be facilitating internet copyright infringement.

CityFibre UK and their local civil engineering partner, Granemore Group, have today announced a second expansion of their original £30m rollout in the Cambridgeshire city of Peterborough, which has already put their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network within reach of 60,000 premises.

Budget UK broadband ISP TalkTalk has today officially signed a contract with pay TV solutions provider Netgem, which will see the provider launch a new “TV 4K” product for their 4.2 million customers that will be powered by the Netgem TV platform and an apparently “frictionless ‘end to end’ operating model.”

A number of reports today have claimed that TalkTalk will, effective from October 2021, partner up with Netgem TV to offer their UK home broadband customers access to a new set-top-box for premium TV (IPTV) services, but only those on their “ultrafast broadband” (e.g. FTTP) plans will be able to take it.
