Opensignal – Avg. UK 5G Mobile Broadband Speeds Hit 138Mbps

Crowd-sourced analyst firm Opensignal has today released some updated benchmarks of early 5G based mobile broadband network deployments across several countries, which shows that average download speeds in the UK have reached 138Mbps – way above 4G on 24.9Mbps and WiFi on 34.1Mbps. But other countries are faster.

The business division of broadband ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has this morning confirmed that they’ve signed a new deal with mobile network operator Three UK, which will see VMB’s fibre optic lines being harnessed to supply capacity (backhaul) to fuel over 3,000 of the mobile firm’s new ultrafast 5G sites.

Mobile operator Three UK will today launch a new “Supercharged” Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) SIM plan with an Unlimited Data Pack, which it claims will give “customers endless data, calls and texts” for just £20 (usually £30). Instead customers are being redirected to online chat that is often unable to resolve key issues.
