The CEO of UK ISP 4th Utility, Tony Hughes, has today said that access to reliable broadband should be a basic human right and that now is the time for the Government to “rethink” their investment in the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project. Instead, Tony believes that such funding should be diverted to upgrade broadband infrastructure.

Mobile and broadband providers Vodafone and O2 (VMO2) have today become the last two major UK network operators to reach a special deal with infrastructure firm BAI Communications (BAI), which will enable them to deploy 4G and 5G based mobile services across the entire London Underground (stations and tunnels).

Two investment groups – one including Neos Networks (bidding alongside Cellnex) and the other Virgin Media (bidding alongside Nokia and Jacobs) – have reportedly been approved to bid on the £1bn auction of 10,000 miles worth of Network Rail‘s trackside cable network. The winner could use this to improve gigabit broadband and 5G cover.

Infrastructure firm BAI Communications (BAI) has announced the completion of the first milestone of its rollout of 4G and 5G-ready mobile (mobile broadband) coverage across the London Underground, which introduces uninterrupted coverage on the eastern section of the Jubilee Line. But only EE (BT) and Three UK have signed to use it.

The MP for Chesham and Amersham, Sarah Green, has challenged the UK Government to make progress on commitments made to local authorities along the Phase One rail route for High Speed 2 (HS2), which among other things included the promise to construct a new “broadband superhighway” to help expand faster internet access.

A new multi-million pound data centre deal has today been signed between BT and BAI Communications, which is designed to support last year’s (here) agreement with EE and Three UK to deploy 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) services across the London Underground by late 2024 (ticket halls, platforms and tunnels).

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and Transport for London (TfL) have today confirmed that, following a recent trial on the Jubilee Line (here), they intend to proceed with their proposed plan to deploy a 4G based mobile (mobile broadband) network across the entire London Underground (platforms and tube trains) by late 2024.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve built 69 new 4G mobile sites and upgraded 35 more across multiple lines in London, which has improved their network coverage and data speeds (mobile broadband) along the city’s key commuter rail routes. But the work doesn’t stop there.

Network Rail, which is responsible for running Britain’s railways, has revealed they will auction off 10,000 miles worth of their old trackside cable network (much of this still runs off legacy copper lines and is in need of an upgrade). The £1bn auction could help to support the UK rollout of gigabit broadband and 5G mobile.

In an odd development Eurostar has blamed the Coronavirus for their decision to disable wireless broadband connectivity (WiFi) in their Standard class train coaches. Meanwhile those travelling in Standard Premier and Business Premier are apparently immune and can still surf the internet (bandwidth allowing).

Ofcom has today updated their advice to the UK Government on spectrum bands suitable for providing “trackside to train connectivity,” which adds the 39GHz band as a possible option. In the future this could be used to support on-board ultrafast broadband capable WiFi access points or mobile (4G, 5G) small cells for commuters.

O2 has signed a new partnership deal with London North Eastern Railway (LNER), which aims to boost 4G and 5G based network coverage along a 45-mile stretch of the East Coast route – between Newcastle in North East England and Edinburgh in Scotland. The upgrade will also improve coverage for communities along the route.

As expected Transport for London (TfL) has today announced that their planned trial with O2, Vodafone, Three UK and EE (BT) of a new 4G mobile (mobile broadband) network along the Jubilee Line (platforms and tube trains in tunnels) – between Canning Town and Westminster stations – will go live tomorrow.

A new study from Uswitch.com claims to have revealed the fastest and slowest stations and train lines on the London Underground for wireless broadband (WiFi) speed. The fastest station was found to be Edgware Road (49.7Mbps), while the slowest was Westminster (0.9Mbps).

A team of researchers working out of the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh have developed a new type of Hybrid Flat Panel Antenna (FPA), which could deliver fast on-board WiFi internet connectivity for trains by harnessing a Satellite broadband connection instead of a mobile (4G / 5G) network for capacity.

Broadband ISP BT has begun inviting some UK customers of their BT Mobile service to take part in a new London underground Wi-Fi trial, which will start mid-March 2020 and run for approximately 3 weeks. Those taking part will be given one month’s credit for the number they use (applied post-trial and subject to feedback).
