Rail operator First Great Western (FGW), which has already made a free wireless internet service available at 23 stations across the United Kingdom via The Cloud (BSkyB), has announced that it’s working with Nomad Digital to ensure that all 53 of their High Speed Trains and Night Riviera trains are also fitted with WiFi.

Microsoft and a variety of Estate Agents have this week criticised the poor performance of broadband in rural parts of the United Kingdom. At the same time the software giant also warned that spending £42.6bn on the High Speed Two (HS2) railway link instead of super-fast Internet connectivity is a “strategic mistake“.

Yorkshire-based train operator East Coast has today announced a new investment of £2.2 million that will be used to upgrade the wireless (wifi) Internet access services on-board each of its 44 trains in order to improve service speeds and reliability.

The Government’s Department for Transport has said it plans to make a new generation of “high speed” Mobile Broadband based Internet access services available to 70% of train commuters by 2019, which will focus on eradicating the existing networks many mobile signal “not spots” and boost customer speeds up to 50Mbps.

The New Economics Foundation, an independent think tank that aims to inspire “real economic well-being“, has advised the government to scrap its £33bn High Speed Two (HS2) railway link and instead invest £5.5 billion from the effort into rolling out “ultra fast to-the-door” broadband coverage across the United Kingdom.

Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica) has signed a new wholesale agreement with Virgin Media that will allow its WiFi customers access to a free wireless internet service at 120 London Underground train stations from June 2013.

Transport for London (Tfl) has announced that passengers at 50 London Overground stations can now access The Cloud’s (BSkyB) free wireless internet (wifi) service and the final seven stations are due to be enabled by the end of June 2013.

Cable operator Virgin Media has this morning confirmed that its FREE public wireless internet (wifi) service is now available from a further 20 London underground tube stations, which brings the total coverage to 92 stations and an additional 28 stations are due to come online in early 2013.

A new report created by Mott MacDonald for Ofcom has suggested that the much delayed auction of 800MHz and 2.6GHz radio spectrum, which will be used to deploy the next generation of 3G and 4G superfast Mobile Broadband services (e.g. LTE), could boost mobile coverage of the national UK rail network by including an “obligation for rail corridor coverage” in future licenses.
