Gov Reveals FREE WiFi on UK Trains to Deliver Just 1Mbps Per Passenger

The Government’s effort to roll-out “high speed” Mobile Broadband to most train commuters by 2019 and WiFi to many of the busiest parts of Britain’s rail network by 2017/18 has been criticised after it was revealed that the on-board WiFi contract only required a speed of 1Mbps per passenger.

Network Rail Breaks Broadband for Uxbridge and West Drayton

Engineers working for Network Rail have damaged a mass of BTOpenreach’s cable ducts near Uxbridge (West London) because they “were not highlighted in the thorough surveys we carried out prior to the work.” As a result broadband and phone services in the area, including West Drayton, are suffering a major outage.

Network Rail appears to have shelved a plan that would have seen the national railway operator effectively privatise their large track-side fibre optic and data infrastructure, which carries all sorts of transport, video (CCTV etc.), signalling and others communications.

UK Rail Commuters Would Pay Extra for Better Internet Connectivity

A new survey commissioned by the Government’s Department for Transport has examined the value of Internet access to train users, finding that 54% of people perceived the quality of their on-board Internet connection to be poor or intermittent and 49% were dissatisfied with service speeds.

HS2 Select Committee Calls for Train Project to Improve UK Broadband

The UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, has today announced the launch of a new scheme that will see the Department for Transport facilitating a £47.8m roll-out of free wireless Internet (wifi) connectivity on trains across England and Wales by 2017. UPDATE Network Rail Fine to Help Improve FREE WiFi on UK Train Routes

In an odd twist the Government’s Department for Transport has said that a multi-million pound fine, which is being imposed upon state-owned Network Rail for missing performance targets (the penalty could be worth up to £70m), will be used to help fund a £90m investment into rolling out free superfast wifi Internet access on the busiest train routes.
