Social networking giant Twitter has teamed up with Wifi metropolis to offer 4 hours for free public WiFi hotspot access at St Pancras International Railway Station in London (normally only the first 10 minutes are free).

A new survey commissioned by the Government’s Department for Transport has examined the value of Internet access to train users, finding that 54% of people perceived the quality of their on-board Internet connection to be poor or intermittent and 49% were dissatisfied with service speeds.

Reports suggest that Network Rail’s large track-side fibre optic infrastructure, which carries all sorts of transport, video (CCTV etc.) and data communications, could be sold off or shared out through a wholesale or joint venture agreement in order to raise money for more railway improvements elsewhere.

The UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, has today announced the launch of a new scheme that will see the Department for Transport facilitating a £47.8m roll-out of free wireless Internet (wifi) connectivity on trains across England and Wales by 2017. Other parts of the UK are also being encouraged to do the same.

Commuters travelling on Northern Rail’s trains from Leeds and Bradford (England) can now access free on-board wireless Internet (WiFi) connectivity thanks to a new scheme that has been funded by £750,000 from the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme. This appears to be the first on-train scheme that BDUK has funded.

In an odd twist the Government’s Department for Transport has said that a multi-million pound fine, which is being imposed upon state-owned Network Rail for missing performance targets (the penalty could be worth up to £70m), will be used to help fund a £90m investment into rolling out free superfast wifi Internet access on the busiest train routes.

Eurotunnel has today confirmed that Le Shuttle and High Speed Train commuters travelling along the Channel Tunnel (North Tunnel) route, which links the UK to France, can now access 2G and 3G based mobile phone and mobile broadband connectivity via EE and Vodafone (O2 will soon follow) thanks to a new fibre optic based GSP-P retransmission system. 4G is coming soon.
