Transport for London (Tfl) has announced that passengers at 50 London Overground stations can now access The Cloud’s (BSkyB) free wireless internet (wifi) service and the final seven stations are due to be enabled by the end of June 2013.

Virgin Media has announced that a further eleven London underground tube stations (total 103) can now access its public wireless internet (wifi) service, which is FREE to existing Vodafone, EE, T-Mobile, Orange UK and of course Virgin broadband customers.

The UK governments Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed that its costly £33bn High Speed Two (HS2) project, which aims to build a new high speed rail link between the midlands and northern England, will also deliver broadband benefits into more areas by laying fibre optic cables alongside its tracks.

Commuters who travel on the East Midlands Train (Stagecoach Group) service will be pleased to learn that the operator has teamed-up with The Cloud (BSkyB) to roll-out a free wireless internet (WiFi) service for rail passengers across 30 of its stations including major hubs like Nottingham, Sheffield, Derby and Leicester.

Cable operator Virgin Media has this morning confirmed that its FREE public wireless internet (wifi) service is now available from a further 20 London underground tube stations, which brings the total coverage to 92 stations and an additional 28 stations are due to come online in early 2013.

The Greater Anglia train operator has announced that it’s working with WiFi Hotspot operator The Cloud (BSkyB) to introduce a free wireless internet service at 100 of its stations across the region (e.g. Cambridge, Norwich and Stansted Airport).

Consultancy firm BWCS has claimed that the UK is ahead of every other country in Europe, at least when it comes to the number of train carriages (2,000) that have been equipped with wireless internet (wifi) capability.

A new report created by Mott MacDonald for Ofcom has suggested that the much delayed auction of 800MHz and 2.6GHz radio spectrum, which will be used to deploy the next generation of 3G and 4G superfast Mobile Broadband services (e.g. LTE), could boost mobile coverage of the national UK rail network by including an “obligation for rail corridor coverage” in future licenses.
