Commuters travelling on trains that belong to Chiltern Railways, which runs between various locations around London, Birmingham, Aylesbury and Oxford, may be pleased to learn that the operator has teamed up with EE to deliver “continuous” on-board WiFi connectivity.. “even through tunnels“.
At present many of Chiltern’s trains already have on-board WiFi, although the service isn’t perfect and can be disrupted by gaps in the signal (e.g. when going through tunnels). Instead the on-board technology is being upgraded to add more capacity, Voice-over-WiFi and this will also be supported by EE’s new 4G wireless trackside network, which even works through tunnels.
Thomas Ableman, Commercial Director of Chiltern Railways, said:
“We were one of the first train companies to introduce free Wi-Fi around five years ago on our London to Birmingham trains. Since then we’ve invested in 4G capability, however due to black spots on the line the service was limited in places.
It was always our vision to deliver truly connected mobility and now, thanks to our partnership with EE, Chiltern will have the fastest and most reliable Wi-Fi in the country. We’ve just made it far easier to do business on the move.”
Apparently the new network is being delivered in stages and the plan is to complete it by December 2016.
