The UK Government (DCMS) has today published their response to a number of recommendations made by last year’s National Infrastructure Commission‘s (NIC) report into Infrastructure, Towns and Regeneration (here), which called for better mobile coverage data, a clearer gigabit broadband plan and more effort to boost take-up.

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has published a Prior Information Notice (PIN) for their Gigabit Infrastructure Subsidy (GIS) programme, which is valued at £800m+ and reflects the part of their £5bn Project Gigabit scheme that aims to help gap-fund the rollout of gigabit-capable broadband ISP networks into rural areas.

The Scottish Government has unveiled an extension of their existing £600m Reaching 100% (R100) contract with BT (Openreach), which will see a further £36m being invested to cover an additional 2,637 rural properties with a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network. But completion is now 2028!

A small group of MPs have given their backing to a new Private Members Bill (PMB), which would make it mandatory for UK operators building full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP networks to initiate a local consultation when deploying new telecommunications infrastructure in residential areas (e.g. telecoms poles).

The Welsh Parliament‘s Climate Change, Environment, and Infrastructure Committee (CCEIC) has today publish a new report into the state of broadband internet access across Wales, which makes 10 recommendations for how the UK and Welsh Government’s could improve connectivity and fill the remaining gaps.

The parents of Virgin Media (Liberty Global) and O2 (Telefonica), supported by InfraVia Capital Partners, have today announced the creation of a new Joint Venture (JV) to build an XGS-PON based and wholesale focused Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network that will cover “up to” 7 million additional UK homes.

The CEO of UK ISP 4th Utility, Tony Hughes, has today said that access to reliable broadband should be a basic human right and that now is the time for the Government to “rethink” their investment in the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project. Instead, Tony believes that such funding should be diverted to upgrade broadband infrastructure.

The Government’s Digital Secretary, Nadine Dorries MP, has appointed Simon Blagden CBE to be the new chair of their Building Digital UK (BDUK) executive agency, which has responsibility for delivering faster broadband and mobile networks across the nation (e.g. the £5bn Project Gigabit scheme and the £1bn Shared Rural Network).

UK ISP FACTCO has today finished its rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to the rural village of Cambois, which they claim is the “largest completed [gigabit voucher] project to date” in Northumberland (England).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has confirmed that they intend to continue to expand their gigabit-capable fixed line connectivity – via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology – to “tens of thousands more premises” across Northern Ireland over the coming years.

The Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for the Economy, Kate Forbes, has issued a brief progress update on their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with BT (Openreach), which is busy extending fixed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage – the vast majority of which is coming via FTTP – across rural parts of the country.

The Government has tonight announced that a joint £82m investment by the Departments for Culture (DCMS) and Education (DfE) will mean that, over the next 3 years, as many as 3,000 primary schools across rural England will now get access to broadband (full fibre) speeds of up to 1000Mbps.

Belfast-based ISP Fibrus, which until now has been focused on building gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across Northern Ireland, has this afternoon revealed its £200m expansion plan for Great Britain – aiming to reach 113,000 premises by 2025 (starting in Cumbria).

The Building Digital UK team has today published another round of Public Reviews (PR) for the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout – this time covering West Yorkshire and Parts of North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and West of Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Warwickshire in England.

The UK Government has published their ‘Digital Strategy’, which reflects a “new plan” to grow the “digital economy” (i.e. addressing tech sector skills, investment and infrastructure). But in terms of mobile and broadband infrastructure, it’s largely another re-announcement of existing schemes (not unlike the ‘Levelling Up‘ plan).

The Essex County Council in England has published a new Digital Strategy document, which among other things sets out their plans to ensure that – come 2025 – “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) will cover “all premises“, while “gigabit-capable broadband” should reach 85% and 4G becomes available to 99% (geographic).
