The LSBUD (Line Search Before You Dig) organisation, which provides an online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms for underground pipes and cables, has published its annual Digging Up Britain 2022 report and revealed that the majority of digging work is still being performed on behalf of the telecoms sector.

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today published a Spring 2022 progress update for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout, which among other things adds new regional procurements in Norfolk and Suffolk and two local supplier procurements in Cornwall, potentially extending 1Gbps speeds to c.190,000 premises.

Broadband ISP Wessex Internet has boosted their existing rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in South England by securing a new contract to connect 35 public sites (schools, libraries etc.) under the ‘Gigahub Connectivity in Rural Dorset Project‘, which is supported by £900k from Dorset Council.

Research group Curia, which was commissioned by rural broadband ISP Wildanet, has today published a new report that predicts how the deployment of gigabit-capable broadband across rural parts of Cornwall in England could deliver £615m and an additional £111m per year for the economy up to 2030.

The Cumbria County Council (CCC) has released an additional £2m of public investment to help keep the current Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) topped-up, which is designed to help rural homes and businesses to get an ultrafast or gigabit speed internet connection installed.

The FTTH Council Europe has today released their annual ranking of the European countries with the strongest subscriber penetration and annual growth of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) broadband ISP networks. Happily, the UK continues to show exceptional growth, and has managed to leapfrog over Germany.

Ofcom’s latest Spring 2022 report into fixed broadband and mobile coverage has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 33% of the UK (up from 28% in Sept 2021), while 19.3 million homes (66%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 47%). Geographic 5G coverage has also improved.

The Government has announced changes that are designed to improve the quality of street works, not least through more inspections, better quality resurfacing and tougher fines for poor quality road works and leaving behind potholes. But the new rules also include changes to help support the rollout of gigabit-capable broadband.

A new survey of over 4,000 businesses in England, which was conducted by the National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise (NICRE), has claimed that sub-standard infrastructure in rural areas – particularly the lack of quality broadband in many parts – is making it harder for businesses to be “resilient and bounce back from adversity“.

Mobile UK Local Authority Digital Champions

The Mobile UK trade body, which represents operators including Three UK, EE (BT), O2 (VMO2) and Vodafone, has today published a new report that calls on the Government to put funding behind the establishment of Digital Champions at local authority level to help coordinate the mobile and broadband infrastructure rollout.

Back in January the Government’s Building Digital UK team “soft launched” a new National Rolling Open Market Review (NROMR) process for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout with a limited number of suppliers (here). Today they’ve launched another NROMR and are opening it up to more suppliers.

The Scottish Government have complained that the UK government are yet to provide any “sense” of the delivery timescale, or how much funding will be allocated to it, from the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout. The SG also claims that the project may only target the “cheapest and easiest to reach premises“, at the expense of rural areas.

The Building Digital UK team has published a new Public Review (PR) consultation for Wales, which reveals that some 327,174 premises might need state aid help under the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme in order to access 1Gbps speeds (rising to 984,806 if including ‘Under Review‘ premises).

The UK Government has today announced the start of their new “Fibre in Water” trial, which will test the deployment of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband cables through 17km of live drinking water mains between Barnsley and Penistone (Yorkshire). In theory, this could help to cut the cost of rural broadband delivery and reduce leaks.

The Building Digital UK team has started a new batch of Open Market Reviews (OMR) under Phase 3A of the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout, which will examine network coverage in Herefordshire, Cheshire, Gloucestershire and Lincolnshire and East Riding.

Alternative network and UK ISP Fibrus has today secured a further investment boost of £220m from a consortium of banks, including the UK Infrastructure Bank, which will be used to extend their existing rollout of a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Northern Ireland to 330,000 premises.

The Australian-based financial services firm Macquarie Group and UK Government have jointly announced a new £12bn private investment in “sustainable infrastructure“, which among other things includes a plan to help spread “super-fast wireless broadband and ultra-fast fibre” (FTTP) across more parts of rural England.
