Comparison site Comparethemarket.com has posted a new study, which they claim shows the top 10 best and worst Areas in England for gamers. Overall Hull comes top due to its speed of 137Mbps and a 99% availability of “superfast broadband“, while Central Devon sits bottom on 34Mbps and 77%. But key details have been overlooked.

Internet giant Google has announced that, due to the lockdown caused by COVID-19, they’re going to give video gamers in 14 countries (including the UK) “free access” to Stadia Pro for two months (usually £8.99 per month) and you can cancel at any time. Just makes sure your broadband ISP speed is up to the challenge.

Last night’s release of the new ‘Call of Duty: Warzone’ video game, which came in at a hefty 83-101GB (GigaBytes) in size, caused traffic at a number of UK broadband ISPs to surge and resulted in the London Internet Exchange (LINX) reporting a new “all time high” of 4.73Tbps (Terabits per second) on their switches.

Some customers of Three UK’s home 4G broadband service, such as those with their Huawei B535 or other mobile WiFi routers and “unlimited data“, have since the end of February 2020 been suffering from problems when connecting to and downloading content from Microsoft’s XBox Live service.

Microsoft has just made their new Xbox Console Streaming feature more widely available, which means that anyone with an Xbox account (and on the Xbox Insider program) in the UK can now try their new remote play video gaming service (streamed from your console to a remote device). But you’ll need a reasonable broadband ISP speed.

Broadband ISP BT has today become the first UK and European distribution partner for Google’s new cloud-based online video gaming platform, Stadia, which enables gamers to remote play video / computer games  – on almost any device – by streaming them live to you from a huge data centre.

Mobile operator Three UK are keen to showcase the benefits of their new “ultra-fast” 5G home broadband network (here) and to that end they’ve agreed a new partnership with Activision, which will help to promote the remaster of the publisher’ popular Call of Duty: Modern Warefare multiplayer video game.

Over the past few months some customers of BT’s broadband service have been contacting ISPreview.co.uk to highlight an unusual issue, which causes high ping (latency / lag) spikes while playing online video games at the same time as somebody is also streaming a video (Netflix, YouTube, Twitch, Sky on Demand etc.).

BT have informed us that customers on their retail broadband ISP network in the UK, specifically those video gamers downloading the Fortnite Season 10 update, have helped to create a 40% increase in internet traffic over normal holiday activity (recorded at 9am yesterday).

A new uSwitch survey of 2,000 UK adults, which has been weighted to reflect a nationally representative criteria, claims that 77% of households with people who play online multiplayer video games have experienced problems with their broadband ISP connections (e.g. disconnections, buffering and slowdowns).

Full fibre (FTTP) builder Cityfibre has used a new survey of 1,005 “serious” online gamers (multiplayer) as ammunition to criticise older copper based broadband (ADSL) and hybrid fibre (FTTC etc.) ISPs, which they complain have plagued users with connectivity issues (“too much lag“) and slow download speeds.

Internet speed analyst firm SamKnows has conducted an interesting study, which examines the performance differences of major UK broadband ISPs (BT, TalkTalk, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media and Vodafone) when being tasked with downloading PC games from Valve’s popular Steam digital distribution platform.
