Customers of mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) in the city of Bristol are starting to benefit from the deployment of a new 4G based small cell mobile (mobile broadband) network, which reflects a recent partnership with Cellnex UK and the Bristol City Council (BCC) in England.

The latest update from Transport for London (TfL) and Boldyn Networks has today revealed that they’ve completed the work to bring 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage to the entire Elizabeth Line, including tunnelled sections in between stations, which can be harnessed by mobile operators including EE, Vodafone, Three UK and O2.

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’ve completed a project to upgrade the capacity of their 4G and 5G based mobile services across “over” 600 postcodes in the port city of Aberdeen (Scotland), which should mean “faster” mobile broadband speeds and greater reliability.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has come top in umlaut and Connect’s latest annual 2024 UK Mobile Network Test, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 4G (voice and data / broadband) and 5G performance across 19 cities, 27 towns and along 10,480km of major roads. On the flip side, O2 (Virgin Media) once again found themselves at the bottom.

Mobile giant O2 (Virgin Media) has announced that, while working alongside the government-backed 5G DRIVE project, they’ve been able to deliver reliable mobile network coverage to 31 “iconic tourist destinations” that were previously “not spots” for mobile signals (i.e. 21 in Wales, 5 in England, and 5 in Scotland).

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today expanded upon their existing partnership with Hiya by integrating the company’s AI-powered scam detection service to help combat fraud and nuisance calls, which sees them claiming to be the “first and only UK mobile operator to provide this service to customers at no extra cost“.

UK ISP Virgin Media (O2) has today confirmed to ISPreview that they and network operator nexfibre have nearly completed the integration of Upp’s full fibre (FTTP) broadband network. Most of the operator’s premises have already been transferred to nexfibre, but we’re told that the remaining properties should be completed next month (December).

The High Court in London has dismissed an appeal by investment firm LetterOne, which had been asking the court to rule that it was unlawfully ordered, under the new National Security and Investment Act (NSIA), to sell Upp’s full fibre broadband network by the UK Government. The company is now considering whether or not to challenge the outcome.

The UK Government’s Telecoms Minister, Sir Chris Bryant, has today announced that he’s agreed a new ‘Telecare National Action Plan‘ with major UK broadband and phone providers (e.g. BT, Virgin Media, Vodafone and Sky Broadband), which requires them to do more to protect vulnerable telecare users when upgrading phone lines to new digital (IP based) networks.

A couple of weeks ago ISPreview reported on how mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) had withdrawn their Pay As You Go (PAYG) Data and iPad SIMs (mobile broadband) from sale to new customers (here). But the big change this week is that they’ve now informing existing customers of their plan to close the service by 31st January 2025.
