A number of our readers have been asking for an update on the progress being made by several major UK broadband ISPs, including TalkTalk, Vodafone, Plusnet and Virgin Media (VMO2), toward the deployment of the “new” IPv6 internet addressing standard. Sadly only one provider was able to give a rough launch date.

CityFibre, which is investing £4bn to cover 8 million UK premises with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network by around the end of 2025, has today announced the successful completion of their first target by extending the network to cover 1 million homes and businesses before the end of 2021.

Ofcom has today approved an earlier proposal – requested by both Three UK and EE (BT) – to increase the permitted power output for the equipment that UK mobile operators use in the 800MHz band, which is expected to result in a small coverage improvement for the related 4G data (mobile broadband) and calling services.

SpaceX’s Starlink service, which delivers ultrafast low latency broadband across the world via a mega constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), is reportedly one of several operators that may be “ close to striking a deal” to secure some of Vodafone UK’s radio spectrum to help boost their network capacity.

Mobile operator Vodafone will this month start offering Eco-SIM cards in their half-sized holders to customers across all 12 of their UK and European markets (plus Egypt, Turkey and South Africa), which are made from recycled plastic and will be “progressively replacing” SIM cards that are currently made from new plastic.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published the first H2 2021 results from their testing of 5G (mobile broadband) networks in the UK cities and towns of Coventry, Leeds and Bradford, Nottingham and Sheffield. EE delivered the fastest speed and availability in most of the locations, but not all.

Crowdsourced benchmarking firm Tutela has published their latest Q3 2021 study of mobile broadband (4G and 5G) performance across the United Kingdom, which found that EE “dominated the majority of the metrics tested,” but Three UK are challenging when looking at the latest ultrafast 5G services.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today extended the availability of their ‘Pro Broadband Packages‘ to SoHo (small office/home office) businesses, which bundles-in improved UK support, “intelligent” Super Wi-Fi (mesh) and an automatic 4G back-up for if your fixed line connection goes down.

CityFibre UK and their local civil engineering partner, Granemore Group, have today announced a second expansion of their original £30m rollout in the Cambridgeshire city of Peterborough, which has already put their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network within reach of 60,000 premises.

A complaint by rival UK mobile operator giffgaff has resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning a website ad for VOXI – the MVNO sub-brand for Vodafone – over “misleading” price claims, which centres around the way they advertised their 12GB data (mobile broadband) plan for £10 per month.

Ofcom looks set to stoke anger among alternative UK network (AltNets) builders after the regulator today flatly rejected their concerns over Openreach’s “Equinox” offer, which will introduce a “major” price cut (details) to the incumbents wholesale Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products for ISPs.

Opensignal’s latest Q3 2021 Mobile Network Experience Report, which uses crowd-sourced data to measure the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) performance of all four primary operators (EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK) to determine which delivers the best service, has given most of the awards to EE. Telecoms giant Vodafone has teamed-up with Benu Networks, Casa Systems, Cisco and Nokia to conduct a “world first” multi-vendor test of TR-459, which reflects a new open architecture standard for the Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) that could make it “quicker and easier” to deliver faster fixed broadband services to customers.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published a general comparison of 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) speeds and availability across 13 of the United Kingdom’s key cities, which sees Glasgow take the top spot on an aggregated average (median) download speed of 144.3Mbps and availability of 28.3%.

CityFibre, which currently aims to cover 8 million UK premises with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network by around the end of 2025, has today secured another major investment boost of £1.125bn from the owner of Ikea (Interogo Holdings) and Mubadala (Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund).

Ookla, which runs Speedtest.net, has today revealed more data about 5G mobile speeds and availability across the UK. Overall, the country delivered average (median) 5G download speeds of 167.38Mbps (15.91Mbps upload), but availability is still low at 10.2% (17.9% on EE, 10.3% on Vodafone, 6.4% on Three UK and 5.4% on O2).
