BT has said that the Government can avoid imposing a tricky industry levy on ISPs or using public funding to help pay for the proposed 10Mbps broadband Universal Service Obligation (USO) because they’ll take the full responsibility, as well as pushing superfast broadband (24Mbps+) to 97-98% of the UK.

A new study from Which? and OpenSignal has used crowd-sourced data gathered from more than 28,841 Smartphone users (503 million tests) to reveal how 4G based Mobile Broadband availability and speeds vary across the United Kingdom, as well as between different network operators.

Mobile operator Three UK has today roped in Cityfibre, TalkTalk, Relish Wireless and the Federation of Communication Services (FCS) in order to press Ofcom for a 30% cap on the total amount of mobile spectrum that any one company can own, which is largely targeted at EE (BT) and Vodafone.

Good news, Ofcom’s latest Q2 2016 consumer complaints report finds that the total volume of UK Telecoms (mobile, broadband and phone) and Pay TV complaints has declined. Sadly some ISPs have fared better than others, with BT coming out top of the worst for fixed line home broadband.

The telecoms regulator has today launched its first “crowdsourced research project“, which asks owners of Android Smartphones’ to download its new Ofcom Mobile Research app, which will help them to build up a more accurate picture of Mobile and WiFi network performance across the United Kingdom.

Vodafone has today confirmed that they’ve officially become members of Ofcom’s voluntary Code of Practice for broadband ISP speeds (details), which helps to protect customers from bad advertising and guarantees “accurate minimum and maximum download speeds“. Took them long enough.

EE has announced that they’ve switched-on their 4G Mobile network for premises on the remote Inner Hebrides Isle of Coll, which is home to just a couple of hundred people. Mind you they weren’t the first to do this (Vodafone has had a community supported 4G service on the island since 2015).

Customers of Vodafone’s mobile network may be pleased to learn that the operator has today introduced a new call barring technology, which is designed to block hundreds of thousands of bulk nuisance and scam calls from entering their network (false PPI offers, missed call scams etc.).

RootMetrics have today published their latest report into the Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance of network operators EE, Three UK, O2 and Vodafone across 16 of the United Kingdom’s primary cities. Overall Liverpool came top of the table, while Hull is still stuck at the bottom.

The CEO of mobile operator Three UK, David Dyson, has once again called on Ofcom to level the market by limiting BT’s (EE) ability to bid on new radio spectrum in the forthcoming auction of airwaves for the higher frequency 2.3GHz (2350 – 2390MHz) and 3.4GHz (3410 – 3600MHz) bands.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has suffered a blow after the High Court rejected their challenge against Ofcom’s proposed hike to annual licence fees for the 900MHz and 1800MHz radio spectrum bands. The outcome could result in price rises and threaten the Government’s £5bn deal to extend geographic mobile coverage to 90%.

The CEO of BT Group, Gavin Patterson, has blasted his rivals behind the Fix Britain’s Internet campaign (Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Vodafone) for making “misleading statements” and using “Orwellian tactics” in order to argue that UK broadband services would improve if the operator didn’t control Openreach.
