A new study from RootMetrics has named EE as the fastest mobile broadband operator in Manchester (England) after it blitzed past rivals, including distant runner-up Three UK, to record an average download speed of 15.2Mbps (Megabits per second) and uploads of 9.4Mbps.

A new RootMetrics study of EE’s allegedly faster Mobile Broadband speeds has revealed that just 40.2% of its test locations had access to the 4G (1800MHz) network, yet speeds averaged 17Mbps (Megabits per second) in locations where it was available and 7.6Mbps when only 3G connectivity could be found.

The rural village of Witherslack in Cumbria (England) has become the latest to be selected by Vodafone to take part in its on-going trials of Open Femto technology, which is designed to boost Mobile Broadband speeds and coverage by connecting into an existing fixed line internet service (ISP).

Mobile operators O2 (Telefonica) and Vodafone have been given the green light to merge their UK based 2G, 3G and future 4G (LTE) platforms through a new network sharing agreement that will also lay the foundations for 98% population coverage by the end of 2015 (two years ahead of Ofcom’s 2017 deadline).

Several reports have suggested that O2 UK and Vodafone are considering the possibility of re-purposing their existing 900MHz radio spectrum for use by the next generation of 4G superfast mobile broadband (LTE) technology, which could be used as a means of combatting EE’s new 4G via 1800MHz service (details). Easier said than done.

Everything Everywhere (Orange UK and T-Mobile), O2, Vodafone and Three UK have agreed, under direct pressure from the government, to stall any legal challenges that could have resulted in further delays to Ofcom’s auction of the superfast “4G” mobile broadband compatible 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands.

Global telecoms giant Cable & Wireless Worldwide (CWW), which is busy trying to sell itself to Vodafone for £1.044bn (here), has warned two rural England (UK) communities in Cumbria (Duddon Valley and Branthwaite) that it will cut their broadband connection by the end of June 2012 because the public subsidy has expired.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has quietly increased their internet data Mobile Broadband usage allowances to 1GB (GigaBytes) on their contract based packages, albeit only those for handset deals that cost over £36 (24 month contracts) or over £41 (12/18 month contracts) per month.

Last week’s proposal by the communications regulator, Ofcom, to allow mobile operators T-Mobile and Orange UK (Everything Everywhere) to launch a new generation of 4G superfast Mobile Broadband services over their existing 1800MHz (2G/3G) radio spectrum (here) has been heavily criticised by rival Vodafone, which suggested that the regulator had “[taken] leave of its senses“.
