The United Kingdom’s communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published their annual study of consumer satisfaction with fixed line broadband, phone, pay TV and mobile providers, which is based on feedback received from around 6,000 consumers who were interviewed as part of the research. Overall it’s good news for Sky Broadband and Virgin Media, but less so for the others.

Mobile operator Vodafone has expanded its promotional poster campaign with advertising firm JCDecaux by reaching a new agreement that will also allow them to install a new network of small cell 4G (LTE) base stations at the company’s various billboard sites.

Vodafone has today confirmed that customers of their Red 4G (LTE) based mobile broadband, calls and text tariffs in the United Kingdom will now also be able to make use of the same connectivity in 40 destinations worldwide.

The Government’s £150 million Mobile Infrastructure Project (MIP), which aims to improve mobile coverage in areas where there is currently none (i.e. benefitting around 60,000 UK premises out of 80,000 known not-spots), is finally starting to talk to some of the local authorities that it originally expected to have completed by the end of 2013.

The endless jostling for dominance of the United Kingdom’s fixed line broadband and mobile telecoms market has continued after reports appeared to suggest that BT’s move to grab either O2 or EE, which was mirrored by a similar approach from Three UK’s parent, has pushed Vodafone back towards a potential acquisition of Virgin Media (Liberty Global) or possibly one of the other big fixed line ISPs (e.g. TalkTalk or Sky Broadband).

The UK Competitive Telecommunications Association, which aims to foster a more competitive fixed telecommunications market and counts most of BT’s major rivals among its ranks (e.g. Virgin Media, TalkTalk, Vodafone, Sky Broadband etc.), has called on Ofcom to improve competition by among other things opening up BT’s passive infrastructure to all providers and launching another market review; although one is already underway.

The United Kingdom’s primary four Mobile Network Operators (MNO), including EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK, are preparing to make a counter proposal to the Government’s demand for a national roaming policy that would see investment boosted in order to build new masts and improve coverage.

In another entirely unsurprising development it’s been reported that Vodafone are seeking to enhance and possibly extend their existing relationship with BSkyB (Sky Broadband) by potentially bundling Sky’s NOW TV streaming service alongside their forthcoming Home Broadband product, which is anticipated to surface during spring 2015.

Budget broadband and phone provider TalkTalk has confirmed that their Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with Vodafone will be coming to an end after the ISP signed a new multi-year deal with Telefonica UK (O2) to take over the management of their mobile customer base.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today released its first new study into the national performance of Mobile Broadband services since May 2011. The results show that the average mobile download speed has risen to 15.1Mbps on 4G and 6.1Mbps on 3G (up from a general 1.5 – 2.1Mbps in 2011). The fastest operators were EE and O2.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that the hilltop market town of Minchinhampton in Gloucestershire (England) has officially become the first of 30 initial rural communities to receive 3G based mobile coverage via their new Rural Open Sure Signal Programme, with many more soon to follow.

A new study of Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance across the United Kingdom, which was conducted by consumer magazine Which? and OpenSignal, has found that Vodafone had the fastest 4G (LTE) based Internet download speeds over the past three months (13.21Mbps) and that’s somewhat better than the average fixed line ADSL home broadband connection that clocks in at 7.4Mbps.

The Government’s Culture Secretary, Sajid Javid, will this week shun objections by the United Kingdom’s largest mobile network operators (EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK) when he launches a new consultation on proposals that could force the operators to improve mobile reception in rural areas through greater sharing of key infrastructure (wireless masts etc.).

It’s no secret that BSkyB (Sky Broadband) has an ambition to launch their own mobile service in the United Kingdom and they’ve already held exploratory talks with Vodafone (here), so fresh reports today that the media giant has been discussing a similar proposition with other mobile operators will probably not come as much of a shock.

Mobile operator Vodafone has joined EE to become the second 4G based Mobile Broadband provider to make use of the latest Carrier Aggregation (LTE-Advanced) technology, which from this month should deliver a significant Internet speed and modest coverage boost for customers in Birmingham, Manchester and London (assuming the user owns supporting hardware).
