British mobile giant Vodafone confirms that they’ve held talks with global cable operator Liberty Global, which owns Virgin Media in the United Kingdom, about a “possible” and mutually beneficial “exchange” of some European businesses. But the idea of a huge £100bn+ mega merger appears to be off the table.

Mobile operator Vodafone has today announced that customers of their 4G (LTE) based mobile plans in the United Kingdom will now be able to make use of the same connectivity and their existing allowances (included calls, texts and Mobile Broadband data) while roaming across a total of 58 destinations worldwide.

Mobile provider Vodafone UK has confirmed today that their consumer focused fixed line superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC) and phone product(s), which will be called Vodafone Connect, should launch in the “coming weeks“. A TV (IPTV) product will then follow later this year.

The communications regulator has today published their latest quarterly consumer complaints report to the end of 2014 and unsurprisingly, despite a general flatness in complaint volumes, there are still some familiar names topping the tables. Telecoms analysts at Ovum have claimed that Mobile Network Operators, such as Three UK, Vodafone, EE and O2 in the United Kingdom, could potentially cut costs and adopt a pure 4G (LTE) focus by switching off their legacy 2G and 3G platforms by 2020. But it might not be quite so simple.

Ofcom has released its second study into the national performance of Mobile Broadband services. The results show that the average mobile Internet download speed had shrunk slightly since last year’s study, with 4G networks delivering 14.7Mbps (down from 15.1Mbps) and 3G doing 5.9Mbps (down from 6.1Mbps).

The Government’s agreement with mobile operators (i.e. Three UK, O2, EE and Vodafone) to extend the geographic coverage of 2G (voice and text) networks from 80% today to 90% by 2017 (the target for 3G and 4G is 85%) appears to have suffered another blow after operators were warned that they might not be allowed to build taller masts.

A new Deloitte report, which was commissioned by the Mobile Operators Association, has claimed that up to £270m could be saved by updating the current Electronic Communications Code so that UK mobile operators can improve their network coverage without having to pay huge fees to install wireless masts on private land.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has made the unsurprising announcement that their new 4G (LTE at 800MHz and 2.6GHz) based Mobile Broadband network will be expanded to reach more than 94% of the Welsh population, with Caerphilly, Cardiff, Connah’s Quay, Llanelli, Newport and Penarth being some of the latest to go live.

A new note from Morgan Stanley, the financial management firm, has suggested that one by-product of Three UK’s (Hutchison Whampoa) £10.25bn move to buy O2 from Telefonica is that the new combined business may “ultimately decide to explore an entry into UK fixed-line“.. again.
