A new study from Global Wireless Solutions has discovered what most UK rail commuters already knew, that Mobile Broadband connectivity on the train is more often than not a pile of poop. Indeed 30.3% of mobile Internet tasks and 1 in 7 voice calls attempted on commuter train routes failed during testing. But Vodafone and EE put in the best performance.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that customers of their ‘Red’ 4G (LTE) based mobile voice and Internet services in the United Kingdom will now also be able to make use of the same connectivity in 23 destinations worldwide.

The latest ISPreview.co.uk survey has found that BT’s forthcoming move to re-enter the United Kingdom’s already stagnated mobile communications market with the launch of a new service for domestic consumers, which might conceivably be followed by a similar proposition from Sky Broadband, could prove attractive to some but it won’t be an easy sell.

At times Vodafone’s on-going attempts to grab a slice of the UK and or EU fixed broadband, TV and phone market can seem akin to throwing a bunch of big names around and seeing what sticks. So it’s little surprise to find that they seem to have moved from sniffing around BSkyB (Sky Broadband) to showing interest in Virgin Media’s parent, Liberty Global. Meanwhile BT continues to threaten.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has published the first responses to its latest Business Connectivity Market Review 2016 (BCMR2016) consultation and perhaps unsurprisingly it finds rivals including Vodafone, BSkyB (Sky Broadband), TalkTalk and Virgin Media all demanding greater access to BT’s cable ducts, dark fibre and leased lines.

As expected the Government appears to have failed in its first tentative bid to boost mobile voice and Mobile Broadband coverage around the United Kingdom by attempting to encourage greater sharing of masts (network infrastructure) in the hope of fostering a national roaming policy.

More news from mobile operators today after Vodafone announced that their new 4G based Mobile Broadband network, which since this time last year has been expanded to cover over 300 cities and towns as well as “thousands of smaller communities” across the United Kingdom, was also being made available to their Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) customers.

RootMetrics has today published their “midyear” (H1-2014) report into mobile operator performance across the United Kingdom, which has seen O2, EE, Three UK and Vodafone all battle it out over areas including service reliability, call / text performance and Mobile Broadband speeds for Internet access.

The remote Inner Hebrides based Isle of Coll, which is home to a tiny population of around 200 people, is about to become Scotland’s first island to get a 4G (LTE) mobile network thanks to a £165,000 community project (Demonstrating Digital Programme) funded by the Scottish Government.

Mobile network operator Vodafone looks set to take on EE after they successfully tested Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology at a laboratory in Newbury (Berkshire, England), which aims to make “crystal clear [voice] calls” possible over their new “ultrafast” 4G network.

The UK telecoms and media regulator has, following concerns from some of the major Mobile Network Operators, today launched another consultation on their controversial and Government-backed plans for a massive hike in annual licence fees for the 900MHz and 1800MHz radio spectrum bands. But the revised fees are still high.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that it will shortly begin expanding the use of their Open Sure Signal (Femtocell) technology in order to make 3G based Mobile Broadband and voice calling services available in up to 100 new rural communities across the United Kingdom.

Mobile operator Three UK has come top in a new Road Trip 2014 study of Mobile Broadband performance, which among other things found that the provider delivered both the fastest average 3G (4.48Mbps DOWN and 1.4Mbps UP) and 4G (6.19Mbps DOWN and 1.54Mbps UP) based mobile Internet speeds. Meanwhile EE was a close second.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has launched WorldTraveller, which for £5 inc. VAT extra per day will allow pay-monthly customers (including business travellers on certain price plans) to take their existing data (Mobile Broadband), voice and text allowances to a number of major destinations outside of Europe (e.g. the USA and South Africa). Calls and texts received are also free.

According to ComReg, the Irish telecoms regulator, 43% of fixed broadband customers in Ireland receive sub-10Mbps speeds. But all that could change after Vodafone teamed up in a 50:50 Joint Venture with state-owned electricity firm ESB to splash €450m (£358m) on a nationwide roll-out of 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) technology. We can only hope they do the same here.

The Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has confirmed that they’re discussing a proposal with Mobile Network Operators (e.g. Three UK, Vodafone, EE and O2) to boost mobile broadband (3G, 4G) and general mobile service reception by encouraging greater sharing of masts and a national roaming policy.

Mobile operator Vodafone has expanded the availability of their £2 extra Per Day EuroTraveller add-on to Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) customers, which means that related users will now be able to take their existing UK voice minutes, texts and data (mobile broadband) allowances with them when they are travelling anywhere in the operators Europe Zone.
