Welshpool-based ISP eXwavia has announced plans to expand the reach of its existing superfast wireless broadband network to cover over 27,000 households and 3,000 businesses in Powys (Wales, United Kingdom) by the end of January 2013.

The Welsh Government (WG) has announced that its £425m Next Generation Broadband Wales project will prioritise faster internet connectivity to the Powys Local Growth Zone (PLGZ), albeit only after the country’s seven Enterprise Zones have received similar treatment.

The Welsh Government has today announced a further £20m to help the existing investment of £425m deliver faster broadband ISP services, which will initially see 96% of homes and businesses in Wales being given access to download speeds of up to 80Mbps (FTTC) by the end of 2015.

The Welsh Affairs Select Committee has today published the result of its investigation into the woeful coverage of broadband services in Wales. The inquiry warned that “too much focus” had been placed on the roll-out of “super-fast” services and that this came at the expense of 90,000 homes in Wales that still have no broadband access.

But of course it would as the telecoms giant has been the only bidder since January 2012 (here) when rival Fujitsu UK “voluntarily” withdrew due to the “risk levels“.

Welsh Assembly Member, Russell George (Conservative), has launched a new campaign to help bring faster broadband to Montgomeryshire (Maldwyn) in north Wales (UK). As part of this effort he wants locals to help him identify broadband “Not Spots” by undertaking an area-wide speed test over 18-19th August.

The Welsh Government (WG) recently published its final Wales Infrastructure Investment Plan (WIIP), which revealed that the region intends to invest a total of up to £400 million into the roll-out of 30Mbps+ superfast broadband services to reach 100% of the country’s businesses by the middle of 2016 and homes by 2020.

Wireless broadband ISP eXwavia has warned that the Welsh Government’s investment strategy for the island of Anglesey (Wales, UK) could result in a “business broadband meltdown” (a reference to the now uncertain future of Wylfa’s nuclear power station) because most of their efforts have so failed to focus upon the regions weak telecoms and internet infrastructure.
