The Senior Network Support Officer for Powys County Council (PCC) in Wales, Mark Baylis, has launched the Radnor Broadband Campaign to help bring faster wireless internet (wifi) connectivity to digitally isolated parts of rural Radnorshire.

The Welsh Government (WG) has today surprised nobody by awarding its £425m contract for the Next Generation Broadband Wales tender to BT. But of course it would as the telecoms giant has been the only bidder since January 2012 (here) when rival Fujitsu UK “voluntarily” withdrew due to the “risk levels“.

Welsh Assembly Member, Russell George (Conservative), has launched a new campaign to help bring faster broadband to Montgomeryshire (Maldwyn) in north Wales (UK). As part of this effort he wants locals to help him identify broadband “Not Spots” by undertaking an area-wide speed test over 18-19th August.

Cardiff-based UK ISP Spectrum Internet has unanimously won the best Communications Provider of the Year gong at this year’s annual FCS Industry Awards 2012, which is a Trade Association for businesses that deliver communications products and services to customers in the UK by radio, mobile, fixed and IP telephony.

The Welsh Government (WG) recently published its final Wales Infrastructure Investment Plan (WIIP), which revealed that the region intends to invest a total of up to £400 million into the roll-out of 30Mbps+ superfast broadband services to reach 100% of the country’s businesses by the middle of 2016 and homes by 2020.

Wireless broadband ISP eXwavia has warned that the Welsh Government’s investment strategy for the island of Anglesey (Wales, UK) could result in a “business broadband meltdown” (a reference to the now uncertain future of Wylfa’s nuclear power station) because most of their efforts have so failed to focus upon the regions weak telecoms and internet infrastructure.

At the same time their related service coverage in the Cefn Coch and Adfa areas (near Welshpool, Powys) has also been extended to connect 80 properties.

Wispa Limited, an outspoken group of consultants who believe homes and businesses in Wales (UK) deserve better broadband, claims to have estimated the “true cost of a lack of rural broadband” to the Welsh economy and population. Apparently a poorly served household in Wales could be paying £3769.20 extra per year due to a lack of adequate internet connectivity.

Welshpool-based ISP Exwavia, which uses wireless (WiFi) technology to deliver broadband internet access speeds of up to 14Mbps (Megabits per second) into isolated parts of rural Wales (UK), has warned that farmers could soon be hit by a new wave of fines and penalties if they do not start using the governments related online services (e.g. Taxation, Electronic Sheep Database etc.).

Apparently the problem is that Wales simply has too many Trees and only their “systematic removal” will solve this.
