Shropshire-based UK ISP Exascale, which since 2019 has been busy building a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover premises in Telford and Wrekin (here), appears to have expanded to new parts of the West Midlands by adding homes and business in West Bromwich to their plan.

UK ISP Hyperoptic, which builds 1Gbps capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks to large residential (MDU) and office buildings, has reached a new agreement with housing association Citizen that will see their service being deployed to cover some 5,000 additional properties in the Midlands.

The state aid supported West Midlands 5G (WM5G) programme has today announced 7 UK-based consortiums, which will each share funding of £2.4m to support the development of new 5G (mobile broadband) based products and services to help “transform transport across the region.”

The large village of New Rossington just outside Doncaster (South Yorkshire), which is home to around 14,000 people, has just become the latest to benefit from Virgin Media’s expansion of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network. Some 5,600 homes have been covered.

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK has just completed another large network extension in the West Midlands of England, which this time sees 10,000 homes in Brandhall (a suburb of Oldbury in the south of Sandwell) gaining access to their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service.

Broadband ISP Hyperoptic UK claims to have provided a “significant donation” to support the Birmingham Education Partnership, which among other things provides laptops to disadvantaged children in Birmingham (c.5,000 children in the city have been unable to access remote learning opportunities during lockdown).

Street works to roll-out a new “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband ISP network have just begun in the West Midland’s city of Wolverhampton. The deployment is being funded by an investment of £50m from Cityfibre, which usually aims to cover around 85%+ of premises in the areas they target.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has just made their first UK deployment of a new-ish technology – Remote Phy (R-PHY) – on their Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) based DOCSIS broadband and TV network in Coventry. The development will make their network more efficient, which should lead to better internet speeds and reliability.

UK ISP Exascale, which is in the early process of building a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to reach premises around Telford in Shropshire (with Wolverhampton in the West Midlands and Cheltenham in Gloucestershire to follow), is to start installing a free Mesh WiFi system for all new home customers.

West Midlands 5G, which is one of the groups responsible for helping to deliver the UK’s first government-backed 5G testbed, has awarded a major contract to a consortium led by O2. Under this deal the mobile operator will build 5G accelerators that could benefit up to 2,000 businesses in Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Coventry.

Cityfibre has secured the contract to roll-out a new “full fibre” (Dark Fibre) network to connect 170 public sector sites (e.g. schools, libraries and offices) across the West Midlands city of Wolverhampton. The deal is being supported by £4.9m of public funding under the UK Gov’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) scheme.

Cityfibre has announced that the first homes on their new £60m and 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the West Midlands city of Coventry have now gone live via UK ISP partner Vodafone. The aim is to cover “almost every home” in the city by the end of 2021.
