The UK Government has today invested £4m to support a new 2-year project (DCIA) trial, which aims to make it easier for network operators to access and deploy 5G mobile (mobile broadband) infrastructure on street furniture and public buildings, such as CCTV poles, traffic lights, lampposts, bus shelters and so forth.

Fixed wireless UK ISP 6G Internet (IX Wireless) has announced that their 100Mbps capable “Air Fibre” broadband network is now rolling out, via new telegraph poles, across the Lancashire town of Burnley and its surrounding areas. The first services are expected to go live for local customers within the “coming months“.

The Mayor of Derby City, Councillor Robin Wood, has criticised a planning application by BT to deploy the next generation of their smart UK Street Hub WiFi kiosks (formerly InLinkUK). According to the Mayor, the only people using phone boxes today were “either drug dealers or prostitutes,” although kiosks aren’t quite the same thing.

A team of researchers, backed by LG Electronics (LG) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft research organisation, claim to have successfully demonstrated a candidate 6G mobile (mobile broadband) technology that was able to use the TeraHertz (THz) band to send data over a record outdoor distance of 100 metres.

The StrathspeyNow community network project, which is being run by consultancy firm Destination Digital, appears to have succeeded in attracting enough interest from local homes and businesses in order to begin the deployment of a new “gigabit-capable broadband” network across the rural Strathspey area in Scotland (Highlands).

New customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband, specifically those who take out one of their “Superfast” (FTTC) or “Ultrafast” (FTTP or G.fast) packages, are now being offered the optional WiFi Guarantee to use, free for the first three months of service (rising to £5 per month thereafter).

The Broadband Stakeholder Group, which is a think-tank that advises the UK Government, has today published new research from Analysys Mason that examines some of the commercial and technical practicalities of providing faster broadband coverage to areas in the UK that are hardest to reach.

The decision by fixed wireless network builder IX Wireless (UK ISP 6G Internet) to deploy a new 15-metre high broadband mast in the Lancashire town of Blackpool has attracted an angry response from local residents. Many of which live in bungalows and fear the new infrastructure will be ugly, dominant and may devalue their homes.

The North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) in England has announced that they’ve teamed up with other local authorities in order to extend the reach of their “free public” Wi-Fi (wireless) internet access network across Ripon, Harrogate and Knaresborough. A total of 16 market towns in the county could eventually receive the service.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone has today enhanced their existing range of home fixed line “Pro Broadband” (FTTC / FTTP) packages by integrating Amazon’s Alexa AI personal voice assistant into their bundled “Super Wi-Fi Plus” (mesh network) booster device, which has also been upgraded to support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax).

Mobile operator Three UK, supported by research from CCS Insight, has today called on the Government not to overlook the benefits of “5G WiFi” in their plan to rollout gigabit-capable broadband across the country. Apparently, 5G based Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) could do it “faster and for half the cost of fixed lines.”

A new Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ISP called WeLink Communications UK has recently begun inviting homes and businesses in the city of Edinburgh (Scotland) to pre-register for their new “Wireless Fibre” service, which claims it will be the first such provider to offer symmetric speeds of up to 1Gbps in Britain.

Ofcom UK has today set out their future spectrum management strategy for the next ten years, which among other things aims to boost support for localised spectrum access (e.g. creating local wireless networks via 5G etc.) and promote greater sharing of existing spectrum in higher frequencies.

UK ISP Quickline, which specialises in deploying full fibre FTTP and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband networks around Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, has today announced the acquisition of a majority stake in rival wireless provider Boundless Networks to help fuel their rollout of gigabit-capable connectivity to rural areas.

Ofcom’s investigation into BT’s compliance with their obligations under the new Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband has concluded that “some customers have been asked to pay materially higher amounts than they should have been.” As a result, they’ve asked the ISP to make a few improvements.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband ISP Zoom Internet, which covers a number of areas in West Sussex (e.g. Bognor Regis), appears to be planning to build their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. The plan will focus on poorly served rural areas, where speeds are sub-10Mbps and no other upgrade plan exists.
