Rural UK ISP Voneus, which is backed by Macquarie Capital and busy deploying its own fixed wireless (FWA) and full fibre (FTTP) networks, is currently linking a number of new villages up to their FTTP broadband network in Buckinghamshire – including Dinton, Nether Winchendon, Upper Winchendon, Cuddington and Haddenham.

A few months ago BT finally launched a new set-top-box for their broadband-based Pay TV (IPTV) service – TV Box Pro (here), but in an unusual move they opted to leave the new WiFi (wireless networking) functionality disabled. The good news is that this is now being enabled for customers.

Wireless and full fibre UK ISP Voneus, which is backed by Macquarie Capital, has continued to expand its operations in South Wales by acquiring IRG Computers, which is the company behind ResQNet – a wireless internet provider that serves rural areas across parts of Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and the Swansea Valleys.

Fixed wireless broadband ISP Connexin last year revealed that they were looking to deploy their own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the North of England (here). The provider has now confirmed that they’re investing £80m to “[end] the broadband monopoly” in Hull and East Yorkshire (tacit reference to KCOM).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today announced that they’re making Plume’s new HomePass smart home service available to all UK households (including those areas not yet covered by their network), which combines a WiFi 6 (802.11ax) based Mesh network boosting system with security features, such as Wi-Fi based motion detection.

The team working on Project Taara at Google’s X technology lab have successfully overcome traditional challenges with signal reliability to demonstrate a new laser-based wireless optical communications link that can deliver data at speeds of up to 20Gbps (Gigabits per second) over distances of up to 20 kilometres.

BT has confirmed that they plan to deploy 300 of their new Street Hub 2.0 kiosks (formerly InLinkUK) around urban parts of the UK, which offer “gigabit” public WiFi, USB device charging, free UK phone calls, small cells to boost 4G or 5G mobile signals, local information, environmental sensors and a large HD display for adverts.

The UK Government has today invested £4m to support a new 2-year project (DCIA) trial, which aims to make it easier for network operators to access and deploy 5G mobile (mobile broadband) infrastructure on street furniture and public buildings, such as CCTV poles, traffic lights, lampposts, bus shelters and so forth.

Fixed wireless UK ISP 6G Internet (IX Wireless) has announced that their 100Mbps capable “Air Fibre” broadband network is now rolling out, via new telegraph poles, across the Lancashire town of Burnley and its surrounding areas. The first services are expected to go live for local customers within the “coming months“.

The Mayor of Derby City, Councillor Robin Wood, has criticised a planning application by BT to deploy the next generation of their smart UK Street Hub WiFi kiosks (formerly InLinkUK). According to the Mayor, the only people using phone boxes today were “either drug dealers or prostitutes,” although kiosks aren’t quite the same thing.

A team of researchers, backed by LG Electronics (LG) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft research organisation, claim to have successfully demonstrated a candidate 6G mobile (mobile broadband) technology that was able to use the TeraHertz (THz) band to send data over a record outdoor distance of 100 metres.

The StrathspeyNow community network project, which is being run by consultancy firm Destination Digital, appears to have succeeded in attracting enough interest from local homes and businesses in order to begin the deployment of a new “gigabit-capable broadband” network across the rural Strathspey area in Scotland (Highlands).

Many of which live in bungalows and fear the new infrastructure will be ugly, dominant and may devalue their homes.
