The latest State of Rural Services report, which is being published today by Rural England CIC, has warned that many people in the country’s small towns and villages still face being “digitally excluded and locked out of key services” due to an “underinvestment in rural connectivity” (e.g. broadband and mobile infrastructure) and skills.

Broadband ISP BorderLink, which currently covers rural areas across Northumberland, Cumbria and the Scottish Borders with their wireless network, has today secured a huge investment of £164m to build a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 500,000 premises across the North of England and Borders areas.

Rural broadband builder Broadway Partners (aka – UK ISP Broadway Broadband) has secured another contract in Powys (Wales), worth £450,000, to extend their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to serve premises in the communities of Aberedw and Glascwm (this follows Dwyriw and Manafon).

The Wi-Fi Alliance has just taken the wraps off yet another update to the still fairly young 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) wireless networking standard which, for marketing purposes, is simply to be called ‘Wi-Fi 6 Release 2‘ and brings with it a couple of key improvements – mostly focused upon boosting upload speeds and power management.

Vodafone UK has today launched their first 5G based MiFi device, which is essentially a small battery powered (lasting up to 8.5 hours) mobile broadband router that can connect up to 32 devices via the WiFi 6 standard. Customers can select either a fixed term or rolling contract, with unlimited data prices starting from £15 per month.

Fixed wireless and full fibre ISP Broadband for Rural Kent (B4RK), which models itself on B4RN’s community build strategy and has been deploying its own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, looks set to complement that effort in 2022 by launching a new range of full fibre packages on Openreach’s national network.

Shrewsbury-based ISP SWS Broadband (RBBS – Rural Broadband Solutions), which serves premises in rural parts of Shropshire (England) and Wales with their fixed wireless and full fibre networks, has today acquired Cadence Networks Limited for an undisclosed sum to support their UK expansion plans.

Mobile operators EE (BT) and Three UK have today become the first two network providers to reach a special deal, which will enable them to deploy 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) services across the entire London Underground by late 2024 (ticket halls, platforms and tunnels). Vodafone to follow.

Scotland ISP Fibrecast, which has previously deployed their own ultrafast wireless and fibre broadband network around the City Quay area of Dundee and the Airport business park, has today announced that they’ll also be selling services to homes over CityFibre’s new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the city.

UK ISP Quickline, which aims to invest £500m on a major rollout of “ultrafast and gigabit-capable broadband” across rural parts of North England and beyond, has today announced that two industry veterans – Lee Allison and Ian Smith – will be appointed as their new Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

Ofcom has today opened a new consultation that seeks feedback on how to maximise the long-term value of Terahertz spectrum, which is expected to play a role in future wireless broadband and mobile broadband (6G) technologies and could deliver speeds of 1 Terabits per second (Tbps) or 1000Gbps (Gigabits).

Residents in the rural Hartlepool borough village of Dalton Piercy (County Durham), which is home to almost 300 people, can now access faster broadband speeds of up to 45Mbps after UK ISP Voneus deployed a new Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network. Previously, some locals often struggled to get fixed line speeds of above 1Mbps.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that, after a long wait, they intend to finally start rolling out SMS (text messaging) support for Wi-Fi Calling “before the end of the year“, but this will be a gradual phased process that looks set to continue more widely during Q1 2022.

Ofcom has today finalised the changes that were first confirmed in July to improve how BT handles delivery of the UK’s Universal Service Obligation (USO), which aims to bring faster broadband ISP speeds to those who can’t yet receive a 10Mbps+ capable download speed and aren’t planned to do so in the near future.
