ISP Quickline has confirmed that they’ve begun the final deployment phase of their £2,054,000 Government funded superfast wireless broadband pilot in rural North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire (East England), which will deliver Internet speeds of up to 50Mbps and could eventually be deployed around the UK.

The Connect8 campaign, which represents the residents of eight rural villages in southern Oxfordshire where BT have refused to upgrade (Howe Hill, Britwell Hill, Cookley Green, Greenfield, Park Corner, Pishill with Stonor, Russells Water and Swyncombe), looks set to adopt a fixed wireless broadband network to fix the problems.

The City of York in England has become the first in the world to achieve a new “Friendly Wi-Fi” accreditation (not hard to do because it’s only just been created in the UK), which means that their free public wireless Internet hotspots employ strict filtering (censorship) to block “inappropriate material” (porn and child abuse).

Ordinarily the news that BT is bringing fibre optic broadband (FTTC/P) cables to your area would be welcome. An unknown number of broadband routers that make use of the 802.11a/b/g WiFi controllers from Realtek, such as some older models of D-Link and TRENDnet kit, appear to be exposed to a vulnerability that allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on related hardware.

A recently published White Paper by the 4G fixed wireless broadband ISP Relish (UK Broadband Ltd.), which offers speeds of up to 50Mbps across parts of central London, has rather shakily predicted that fixed landlines will be “non-existent” in the office and will be “virtually extinct” in the home come 2025.

The town of Caldicot in Monmouthshire (South Wales, UK), which is home to around 10,000 people, has reportedly bid to secure £1,800 of funding from the Severnside Programme Board. The money will, it’s hoped, be used to deploy a free public WiFi wireless Internet service across the town centre.

EE has beaten Vodafone to the punch by becoming the first primary Mobile Network Operator in the United Kingdom to launch a practically seamless WiFi calling service, which means that customers who can’t get a good cell signal can still make calls.. so long as there’s a usable WiFi network nearby.

Sigh, it happened again, I was in the middle of streaming a movie over the home WiFi network while simultaneously making toast in the kitchen, and suddenly it stopped. Moments later a little icon pops up to torment me with the news, “Internet Connection Lost!“, it exclaims while clearly oblivious to my snorting sounds of frustration. Where did it go? Who took my Internet? And if its lost, how can I find it again?

The plan to deploy a new network of free public WiFi hotspots across Newcastle and Gateshead in north east England, which last year took a hit after the project’s original partner (Spain’s GOWEX) collapsed due to falsified accounts (here), looks set to continue after the local authorities signed a deal with BT instead.
