Cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today highlighted the latest “independent testing” from the University of Bristol and Farncombe, which appears to show that their new SuperHub wireless broadband router offers better home WiFi performance than BT’s equivalent HomeHub4. It also beat similar kit from Sky Broadband and TalkTalk.

Cheshire-based ISP Vispa has finally completed the installation of a new fibre optic capacity link from BT, which has been in the planning stages since earlier this year (here) when capacity problems contributed to some performance woes on their City Wireless network and later caused new installations to be suspended.

A live experiment conducted at six locations around central London (UK) has revealed that 36% (322) of the wifi hotspots identified were “completely unsecure” and potentially a ripe playground for hackers and fraudsters. A related poll also found that only a third of people consider how secure a WiFi network is before connecting.

The Worcestershire County Council (WCC), which recently signed a state aid supported £20.75m deal with BT to make “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) available to 90% of local premises by mid-2016 (here), has warned that it could use some of the money to overbuild an existing superfast wireless broadband network.

Surrey-based wireless ISP Wifinity has managed to secure a debt finance facility of £1.9m from Santander Corporate & Commercial, which will be used to help expand the reach of their existing fixed wifi and public hotspot network around the United Kingdom. A private equity investment of £500,000 has also been secured.

As expected the Birmingham City Council (BCC) has signed a new deal with Virgin Media Business (VMB) that will result in the operator rolling out an unlimited free wireless internet (wifi) zone across key parts of the city centre. The latest 3G and 4G (mobile) based small cell technology will also be deployed.

Ofcom has announced that Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA) ISPs that make use of the 28GHz radio spectrum band, such as Urban Wimax and Cable & Wireless UK, will now be able to keep the licence “indefinitely” (i.e. they were due to expire on 31st December 2015) but there will be a cost.
