The visitors and residents of Newcastle and Gateshead in North East England will be pleased to learn that GOWEX has been picked to roll-out a free wireless Internet (wifi hotspot) network across “scores of public areas” in both locations.

Banking giants RBS and NatWest have confirmed that all of their customers will be able to access a free wireless Internet (wifi) service, which is already active in over 800 of the bank’s branches across the United Kingdom, by the end of the summer 2014 when almost 1,200 additional branches will have free WiFi installed.

Banking giant HSBC has put out a short announcement today to confirm that over 650 of its branches across the UK are now able to offer customers free wireless Internet (wifi) access, which is thanks to the installation of a premium BT Wi-fi network.

Powys-based wireless broadband ISP eXwavia Xwavia has, following last month’s report by ISPreview.co.uk (here), confirmed that they’ve secured an investment of £1.2 million from Finance Wales to help make faster Internet connectivity available to more rural parts of Wales in the United Kingdom. The first areas to benefit will be in Conwy.

Business Internet provider Metronet UK has announced that their hybrid fibre optic (Dark Fibre) and “high capacity” carrier grade wireless network has now connected almost 20% of Greater Manchester’s “most important buildings” and almost 30% of those in Manchester city centre with speeds of up to 10Gbps.

London-based business ISP Urban WiMAX, which specialises in delivering a mix of wired and or wireless (wimax and microwave) broadband / Ethernet solutions to around 500 customers, last month secured additional investment worth £2.15 million through Santander’s Breakthrough programme and is now planning for their future growth.

A new survey conducted by Samsung UK has found that 37% will choose coffee shops based on the availability of free WiFi rather the quality of the tea or coffee being served. So it’s no surprise to find that 69% of Brits work remotely from coffee shops at least twice a week. But apparently what cafes really need is.. a printer.

The communications regulator has today set out its approach and priorities (e.g. future 5G mobile broadband) for managing and sharing (e.g. white space technology) the country’s radio spectrum up to the year 2025. As part of this, Ofcom has also published an Interactive Spectrum Map to show how different frequencies are used in the United Kingdom.

Virgin Media has reported that new registrations to its public WiFi hotspot service at 137 London Underground Tube stations were up by 50% yesterday as commuters navigated their way around the capital during the strike.

Virgin Media has announced that a further 6 London Underground Train/Tube Stations will join its related network of public wireless Internet (WiFi) hotspots tomorrow, which raises their total coverage to 137 stations (up from 131 in February 2014). A new 3-year deal has been signed between Shepway District Council in Kent (England) and Maidstone-based Custodian Data Centre that will make Internet data speeds of up to 100Mbps (Megabits per second) available to businesses in the district’s main employment sites.
