The Cloud, a public wireless Internet hotspot operator owned by BSkyB (Sky Broadband), has noted how similar technology to that already used in wifi networks could soon help everything from Smartphones to possibly even electric Cars get recharged while surfing the Internet and without needing to be plugged in.

Fixed wireless broadband ISP ThinkingWISP can now reach 90% of Norfolk in England after it was able to install two new masts in Outwell (near Wisbech) and at Gayton (near King’s Lynn). The new infrastructure also gives them some coverage in the counties of Cambridgeshire and Suffolk.

BT’s up to 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) technology now comes in a new flavour – GEA-FTTC Street Access. The service appears to be targeted at mobile operators that want to improve local wifi and 4G coverage by utilising council street furniture (e.g. payphones) but can’t get or don’t need a full fibre optic line for the capacity.

The boss of Europol‘s cybercrime division, Troels Oerting, has warned that they are seeing an “increase in the misuse” of free public wireless Internet networks (WiFi hotspots). In particular hackers have been known to target them as a means of stealing personal and financial information.

The Scottish Government’s “Cyber Integrator” (cybercrime tzar), Keith McDevitt, has warned home owners to close their open wifi networks (wireless) after finding that an increasing number of cyber criminals, such as Internet paedophiles, were using them to commit offences that ISPs often trace back to innocent broadband users.
