Customers of Sky Broadband in the Gloucestershire and Wiltshire areas of England yesterday began suffering from a Major Service Outage (MSO) after an unspecified problem triggered a loss of broadband and phone service across multiple telephone exchanges in the area.

Rural ISP Wessex Internet (M12 Solutions), which deploys superfast wireless broadband (50Mbps) and some ultrafast (up to 1000Mbps) fibre optic services to premises in parts of North Dorset and South West Wiltshire (England), has reduced some of their charges and boosted usage allowances.

A total of three Government supported Phase 2 Broadband Delivery UK contracts have today been signed between BT and the English counties of Wiltshire, Lincolnshire and Central Bedfordshire (inc. Bedford Borough, Luton and Milton Keynes), which will expand the reach of superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity to many more premises.

A previously unknown operator called TrueSpeed Communications has announced a new deal with Hibernia Networks, which will help it to roll-out a 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable pure fibre optic (FTTP) broadband network to cover homes and businesses in parts of North East Somerset and possibly Wiltshire (England).

The Swindon Borough Council’s recently approved a £1.9m project with UKB Networks Ltd., which will push “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage out to 99.4% of local premises by 2016 via a fixed wireless 4G (LTE) network instead of BT’s fixed line hybrid-fibre (FTTC/P) infrastructure, is facing a challenge from rival politicians.

The joint public and private “Great Western Broadband” project to roll-out BT’s “superfast” (24Mbps+) FTTC/P network to 94% of South Gloucestershire by the end of March 2015 has completed its first major deployment phase, with 17,000 premises covered (2,000 more than originally planned).

The Swindon Borough Council, which is administratively independent of its parent county in Wiltshire (England), has announced that their Broadband Delivery UK based plan to improve the cover of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) could take a different approach by expanding UK Broadband‘s existing fixed wireless 4G network.

BTOpenreach’s state aid supported plans to roll-out a fibre optic cable through their existing cable ducts in order to help bring superfast broadband connectivity to parts of rural south Wiltshire in England, specifically the Dun Valley and surrounding areas, have been dealt a blow due to several key ducts being blocked by silt.
