More than 1,100 businesses in the Wiltshire UK town of Swindon can now gain access to a new Gigabit speed capable “full fibre” service after Cityfibre announced that their network was “open for business.” Ultrafast broadband will eventually also be extended to local homes via ISP partner Vodafone, but not for awhile.

Alternative rural network ISP Wessex Internet appears to be making good use of the UK Government’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) and are using the investment to help grow their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network into more villages around Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that their “Fibre First” programme will cover the whole of Salisbury (Wiltshire, England) with Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband technology and it will aim to do so within just 12 months, which could be the fastest city-wide network build in the UK so far.
