A second £2.8 million extension of the existing Wiltshire Online project has been announced that will see Openreach (BT) roll-out their faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to an additional 5,000 homes and businesses in the county. But the 24Mbps+ coverage target remains unclear.

Fibre optic ISP TrueSpeed has hinted to Ofcom that its 150Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network, which is currently rolling out to parts of the Chew Valley in rural North East Somerset (England), could also be expanded into Devon, Wiltshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire.

Openreach (BT) has announced that their up to 80Mbps FTTC and 330Mbps FTTP broadband network will be extended to cover 6,500 premises in the Priory Vale part of North Swindon (Wiltshire), which should add further competition for cable operator Virgin Media and wireless ISP UKB Networks.

Earlier this month reports claimed (here) that cable operator Virgin Media were on the verge of announcing a major expansion of their 300Mbps broadband and TV network into parts of North Swindon (Wiltshire), where a state aid supported wireless network is deploying, and it’s now been confirmed that 7,000 premises will benefit.
