SSE Enterprise Telecoms and Cityfibre Agree UK Fibre Partnership

Tuesday, Jun 18th, 2019 (11:33 am) - Score 1,766

Fibre optic network builders Cityfibre and business connectivity provider SSE Enterprise Telecoms have today signed a new strategic partnership, which extends their existing relationship by allowing both sides to take more advantage of each other’s respective networks and services.

At present SSEET operates a 12,000km+ long fibre optic and Ethernet network across the United Kingdom, while Cityfibre’s Dark Fibre and FTTP broadband services are present to varying different degrees in over 50 towns and cities (they’re also rolling out a new 1Gbps FTTH ISP network to reach 5 million homes by 2025).

Under the new deal Cityfibre will be joining the ranks of SSEET’s Edge Plus providers for high capacity Ethernet services (up to 1Gbps, with 10Gbps via bespoke solutions) and their related LIVEQUOTE price comparison tool. The partnership thus enables SSEET’s partners’ access to CityFibre’s last-mile metro networks in Bradford, Sheffield, Leeds, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. A further 9 cities will be added in the coming months.

Rob Hamlin, Cityfibre’s Commercial Director, said:

“Partnering with SSE Enterprise Telecoms not only helps to meet increased demand and provide all-important choice in the market, but culturally, our two organisations are well suited. We share a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a need to disrupt the market for the benefit of our partners and customers.

SSE Enterprise Telecoms’ customers will gain access to our differentiated 1Gbps and 10Gbps Ethernet services, and in return, CityFibre will be able to take advantage of the company’s extensive reach and customer base to increase connections across our full fibre network infrastructure.”

Colin Sempill, CEO of SSEET, said:

“We’re on a mission to improve the way organisations buy network services. SSE Enterprise Telecoms and CityFibre have both invested substantially in UK fibre networks over the last ten years, challenging the status quo and developing a strong proposition in the market. It was essential to choose a like-minded partner to continue to deliver high quality connectivity services to the market, and CityFibre was a natural fit.”

End.

Mark, any idea how this squares with Vodafone’s exclusivity on the CityFibre network?

Vodafone’s deal is focused on residential connectivity, while today’s news is more related to Cityfibre’s Dark Fibre / Ethernet connections for businesses etc. Different propositions, albeit both with fibre in their diet.

Is this a surprise? With an emergent network of common investment in alternative fibre it’s almost inevitable
