Return Path, an email certification and reputation monitoring company, has predicted that by the end of 2012 more people will be reading internet emails on a mobile device (e.g. Smartphone, Tablet etc.) than via a computer desktop or webmail service.
At present email readership via mobile devices accounts for nearly 30% of all “opens” (i.e. opening an email to read it), yet this has apparently grown by 82.4% over the past year (March 2011 to March 2012) and could thus pip the 50% mark before 2013. The situation appears to reflect a wider move away from desktop systems by casual users.
Return Path’s study also found that Apple devices (iPhone, iPad etc.) account for 85% of all mobile email opens. It also reveals that MS Outlook is still the king for desktop email clients, accounting for 68% of all opens. Meanwhile Yahoo Mail! is the most read webmail service (37%), followed by Microsoft’s Hotmail (29%) and Google’s GMail (6%).
