JT Global has this afternoon become the fourth ISP to launch a subscription-free broadband TV service based off the YouView (IPTV) platform, which is available to its customers on the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey.
At the time of writing we couldn’t find any package details on their website, although JT’s press release said that the YouView set-top box is “now available” either FREE or with selected JT fibre and home broadband packages. It can also be purchase for a one-off price of around £299.
Barna Kutvolgyi, M.D of JT’s Global Consumer Business, said:
“We are delighted to introduce YouView exclusively into the Channel Islands’ market as a cost effective alternative to subscription based TV services and as an enhancement to existing free-to-air TV. Which is why we are also very proud to be among the first UK internet service providers to introduce YouView, which is backed by the leading national TV channels, so bringing a new way of watching television to more homes.
However, to enjoy the benefits of emerging technologies such as this service, fast and reliable broadband is essential. Our decision to launch YouView therefore represents the first of many internet enhanced services that we will be introducing for Islanders to take full advantage of our new JT fibre optic superfast broadband service.”
The YouView service typically includes the standard Freeview channels, video recording features and access to catch-up TV content (iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand5 etc.). ISPs can also add premium content if they so wish and the box tends to come with Sky’s Now TV powered service ready to use.
JT’s semi-related Gigabit Isles initiative currently aims to roll-out FTTH services to 42,000 homes and businesses within the next 3 years (completion in 2016).
