New customers who wish to take BT’s entry-level ‘up to’ 38Mbps superfast broadband (FTTC) package, better known as BTInfinity 1, will be displeased to learn that its monthly usage allowance has been brutally cut from 40GB (GigaBytes) to a meagre 20GB and the standard price of £15 a month is unchanged.
It’s unclear why such an unusual change has been made, especially at a time when BT’s rivals are increasing their allowances, but as a counter-balance BT are offering the package at £7.50 per month for the first 6 months of service (£15 thereafter). The usual 18 month contract also still applies.

BT Infinity 1
* Download speeds of up to 38Mbps (9.5Mbps uploads)
* 20GB Usage Allowance
* 2GB Online Cloud Storage
* £30 Activation Charge
* FREE HomeHub 5 Router
* FREE UK Weekend Calls
* FREE Unlimited BTWiFi Hotspots
* FREE BTSport TV service
* FREE Parental Controls (Network Level Filter and Anti-Virus etc.)
As usual new customers also have to pay line rental from £15.45 a month (£15.99 from 04/01/14), which can be reduced if paid 12 months in advance (total £141). Never the less many people will view 20GB as being quite poor for an FTTC line.
