Business Internet provider Metronet UK has announced that their hybrid fibre optic (Dark Fibre) and “high capacity” carrier grade wireless network has now connected almost 20% of Greater Manchester’s “most important buildings” and almost 30% of those in Manchester city centre with speeds of up to 10Gbps.
The ISP, which usually targets business areas that have previously suffered due to a lack of superfast broadband infrastructure from BT or other operators, also said that they had teamed up with Greater Manchester’s leading property organisations and agents (e.g. Bruntwood, OBI, Matthews and Goodman, WHR, Capital Properties, Allied London and Orbit etc.) and hoped to connect (coverage) 50% of Manchester’s top office spaces.

Elliott Mueller, CEO of Metronet UK, said:
“At Metronet (UK), we want to make Greater Manchester one giant digital campus. We’ve already enabled 30% of the city’s most important buildings and we’re working hard to connect 50% of them with the next year. We believe that connectivity is a fundamental right, not just a privilege.
In this day and age, where the Internet is as important to businesses as electricity or water, no matter where a businesses chooses to locate themselves, superfast connectivity should be available within hours. Our property partners share our ambition for the digital city and we are working together to make this dream a reality.”
It should be said that Metronet’s goals, while worthy of praise, remain a little vague given the lack of a clear definition for what constitutes a “top office space” or “most important building“.
