KC Bring FREE Public WiFi Wireless Internet to the Town of Beverley

Thursday, Jun 12th, 2014 (8:34 am) - Score 892

The medieval market town of Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire (England) area is to give locals and visitors access to a free “high-speed” wireless Internet (wifi hotspot) service following a new deal with the local telecoms incumbent KC. Sadly it will only be free to use for the first 20 minutes.

The new service is to be deployed across the town centre by the end of June 2014 and its coverage will then extend from the North Bar down through Toll Gavel and Butcher Row. Naturally KC hopes that the latest deployment will be as successful as the public WiFi solution they’ve already deployed in Hull city centre, Newland Avenue and Princes Avenue.

Helen Watson, Beverley Town Council’s Town Clerk, said:

Providing public access WiFi requires a lot of investment but despite the budget cuts that all local councils have seen in recent years we were determined to deliver it and KC offered us several options to help us make it achievable.

We wanted to work with KC on the project as they’re a local business and know the town well. The end solution is absolutely ideal as there is no financial investment needed by the Council and customers can get online free. It’s only thanks to KC’s generosity and investment that this is possible.”

Predictably KC’s generosity has its limits and as a result the WiFi service will only be free to use for the first 20 minutes, before charges will apply to help cover the cost of providing the service. However local residents with a KC broadband service can login to any KC WiFi hotspots free of charge, in line with their account usage limits.

Back in 2012 KC claimed that Beverley, thanks to their local roll-out of FTTH connectivity, had access to the fastest broadband speeds in the country. Obviously these days the work by Gigaclear, Hyperoptic and B4RN etc. has helped to give others a share of that title.
