Customers of BT’s consumer broadband and phone services can now monitor the network status of their local area, remotely reboot their HomeHub wireless router, get support and manage their accounts online via the new MyBT Smartphone app for Android and iOS (iPhone) devices.
The app will work over either your home WiFi or Mobile Broadband connection and also includes tools to help optimise a customer’s broadband connection, including testing broadband speeds and restarting a BT Home Hub remotely.
BT claims that they are the “only broadband provider to offer these tools via an app,” although Vodafone’s recently launched Home Broadband service (here) also includes quite a capable companion app.
Steve Wilson, Digital Director at BT Consumer, said:
“The My BT app makes it easy for customers to keep track of their BT account. We see a significant increase in the number of customers accessing the My BT website on a mobile device. We know that our customers lead increasingly busy lives and wanted to offer a smartphone app that gives them a helping hand in dealing with straightforward BT queries at a time that is convenient to them.”
Apparently BT intends to add new features to its app “on a regular basis“, with additional account management and help functionality expected to be introduce over the “next few months“.
At this point some customers might be feeling a bit dizzy with all the apps on offer from BT, such as those for their SmartTalk service, BTSport Player and WiFi connectivity. One app to rule them all should perhaps be BT’s next focus, provided you could fully disable any unwanted battery sucking features.
You can grab the new My BT app from Google Play or Apple iTunes. Customers will be asked to enter their BT ID username and password the first time they log in to the app, but from then on they’ll be able to use a 4 digit PIN to access their account (i.e. making it easy to log in from anywhere).
